Not really bought many new releases this year, but top older things i've picked up this year are probably...

Jaco Pastorius - Word Of Mouth (esp. John and Mary -beautiful)
Nana Vasconcelos - Saudades
Phillip Glass - Glassworks
Gavin Bryars - Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (though that may have been late last year)

One of my favourite things that was released this year was by a group called Alan who i really like and was on this compilation i had a tune on. They come off best live, but one of their recordings can be found here. It's not their best piece, and not the one from the compilation, but worth a listen IMO. Oh, and there's this guy called Grovesnor (sic) who is really really entertaining in a kind of eighties/Har Mar type way (kind of), but definately best live.

I could do with hearing more new things, so if anyone has any suggestions in the instrumental/jazz/avant-classical etc etc vein, post me a link will you? Thanks.

GbV's B000 Director's Cut. A monolithic triple album fiasco, with ludicrous sleeve art and almost 60 tracks. Good blurb from Robert Scat, though why there was this problem with cutting off the beginning of tracks when transferring from Bob's cassette masters to DAT I can't work out. I.e. why not set the DAT rolling then - uh - press play on the cassette. I must be missing something here, obviously. Whatever. Postal Blowfish is my fave so far - predictably. Btw, Vampire on Titus is still the best GbV LP, imo.

mastadon- leviathan- the album is amazing. gives me faith in metal again.

joanna newsome- crab cockle cowrie- best album ive heard in years. for the most part just a girl playing concert harp and singing. just proves that a good album doesnt need a million tracks. get it!!

Other than that...I don't know about anybody else, but when i go into a record store, 9 times out of 10 im buying something thats been out for a while. There is so much music out there that ive never heard that is most likely amazing that somebody has just told me about. Like Wayne Krantz for example...he made a live album in 95', miced by an old dude wearing condensor mics on his glasses into a DAT. Definetly can tell, but its still redonkular and sounds awesome. Got the spine tingles first time I heard it
