$2000, a drum kit, a room, and vocals
$2000, a drum kit, a room, and vocals
Any opinions on mic selection?
I was thinking of a pair of earthworks tc30k + akg 414 because i could use all 3 for drums and then the 414 for vocals.
I already have 57's, a 52, and mc012's for the toms.
Any other combinations?

I would say a pair of 414's and a audio technica 4047, or a pair of 4050's and a 4047. All great vocal mics.. and I've used even the 4047 as an overhead for a darker sound!

u195 and two 414's?

Is a pair of 414's worth the extra $400 over a pair of 4050's?

I'd grab a nice set of sdc mics. They're so overlooked and so much more useful around the studio IMO. Get a pair of Neuman KM184, AKG451E or other vintage w/ screw on caps or even the AT4051 pair. The cool thing if you get a pair of the AKG's is that you can grab a lollipop LDC capsule for another $450 and have a smokin' vocal mic. So, with that route, you'd still have another $800 or so left over to use for other mics, stands, a pre, compressor or anything else you might need. How bout a nice SM7? What about a 4047 as someone already mentioned?

The only true great mic on this planet is the Shure SM-57. It is the most consistant in not totally sucking of anything ever built. All other mics are "application dependant".

i like your original idea. will combine well with what you have. the earthworks are incredibly versatile, especially if you record any acoustic instruments (including gtr).
i would think that betwen the tc30 and mc012 pairs, you'd have sdc condensors covered for a while.
414 versus 4050 is a matter of taste. if there's a particular vocalist you'll be recording mostly (you?), find out which one their voice sounds better on. the 414 has more character, i think, while the 4050 is flatter (both in frequency and attitude).

Re: $2000, a drum kit, a room, and vocals
I have Earthworks SR77s (the cardioid model), and I feel like they are often not thick enough sounding to work well as overheads. They are also so hi-fi that if you compress the crap out of them it brings out a lot of unwanted stuff.
If I had to pick one vocal mic it would not be a 414, but I really like them for overheads. How about an RE20 and two 414s?

i had an idea for a different approach...
i could move my mc012's to the drum overheads, buy a 421 for the rack tom, buy an sm7 for the floor tom, and a 4047 for the room. that way i will get 2 good vocal mics and a good dynamic in the 421 for guitars.
any thoughts?

That's a pretty good plan....and a lot less than the $2K total.
