The bass on the Stones' "under my thumb" is out of tune. But, I never noticed anything in "lady jane".

How about "Andmoreagain" from Love's Forever Changes - was listening to this yesterday and noticing how the vocal track would never get onto an album today, it's so all over the place.

Mick Jagger is a prime example of style and character well overiding technical ability. Of course, this applies to the early stones stuff, over the years he appears to have developed a lot more voice control.

Bill Wyman played fretless in the studio, so he was often a little off.

Wipe Out, by the Surfaris. Guitar badly out of tune in higher positions. Perhaps the guitar needed an intonation job.

"We'll Sing in the Sunshine", can't remember the artist. Her singing is badly flat.

Really, I would say most pop singers tend to sing flat, as well as slide up to their intended notes. Most of the time it's okay, sometimes not.

Paul M's bass is hideous on Band on The Run (and yet still way cool... Go figure...)
How about Keith's guitar on the intro to Monkey Man? It is hysterical. That third chord is just putrid. Then again most guitars don't intonate for shit.
Just about every vocal Micky Dolenz ever tracked is slightly off (especially his backing vocal at the end of Door Into Summer.)
A lot of the Doors bass lines are pretty dodgy. I think they were done pretty quick and dirty. The there's the vocals on Pink Floyds Apples and Oranges. And almost everything Roger Waters has ever sung.
On Laugh Laugh there is a repeating harmonica break. The last time it appears the last chord is on Mars.

If you want to hear a for real human being singing a song and comletely losing the notes due to lack of range and because of drink then listen to Leonard Cohen singing "One of Us Cannot Be Wrong" from Songs of Leonard Cohen. At the end of that track he starts harmonizing to the part getting higher and louder until his voice breaks at the very end, it's great. You can just imagine him swaying around the room with a bottle of wine in his hands not even paying attention to the microphone.

RE Monkey MAN yeah! That is one of the all time great guitar riffs, but man it is definitely out. Sounds like he was using a telecaster or maybe a strat, neithier of which are easy to get any kind of intonation out of. I have a el cheapo indonesian strat that is only strat I ever had with proper intonation aside from a Japanese made Squire I had years ago. I never could get strats to set up well, but that one he is using on monkey man is rediculous.

Oh... I don't mind the Rick tone... It is just that he is out of tune... Check out the "If I ever get outta' here..." part on Band and you will see what I mean.
