necktie maintenance & storage

Post by wing » Wed Dec 29, 2004 8:33 pm

i have a lot of neckties... but besides learning how to wrap the things around my neck, i've never really learned how to care for them: how to wash them and get wrinkles out. anyone?

also, what is the best way to store them? now I just have them sort of rolled up in a drawer or hanging over clothes hangers. any suggestions?

thanks.

you can probably find something to hang in your closet specifically for storing neckties. but i'm of course not very helpful because i don't know what it's called, where you would find it, how much it costs, or really anything about anything for that matter.

this dude in my old band has a tie that looks like a penis. it always got quite the reaction from the crowd. that and his molten lead guitar lava.

i was wanting to learn how to wash ties, my white tie got a stain on it, but when storing it, i just hang it over the hangar like you do. I also have a little rack thingy drilled to my closet door that has prongs sticking out horizontally, which i use for ties and belts.

Dry cleaning is always the best option for ties. Let the professionals do it.

Absolutely, positively do not machine wash your ties.

what about like a cheap tie, like not really worth it to dry clean. Would it screw it up to handwash it, its my only tie that goes with my suit.

Yeah, really...don't handwash a tie. The inner lining always gets screwed up and they invariably shrink in unpleasant ways. The dry cleaner will hang them tucked through a nifty carboard doo-dad on a hanger in a handy little plastic bag that often says "your neckties...finished to perfection!" or some such foolishness. Dry clean each of your ties, then you can forever keep them in the dry cleaner setup so they don't get dusty from disuse like mine always do. Longterm storage this way sometimes means you gotta pass a cool iron over thin silk ties to get the hanging crease out. Use a cool iron, and put the tail of a dress shirt over the tie, so the iron doesn't directly touch it. I like a nice a tie when I'm forced to wear one, but hate shopping for them, so I try to take care of the ones I got...

I have, or had, dont know if i still have it, but its a tie that has a bunch of fish on it. It is really ugly, but it was from when i was 10 or something, so it wont really fit.

I also dont know how to tie a tie, i'm 18, and i have my dad orr brother do it for me.

I like those elasticated ones that stupid posh kids used to wear at school. You could twang them in the epiglottis by pulling them and letting 'em go.
