This link was posted on the Ampex mailing list and you will probably need to splice the long URL back together.

Is it time to panic now? Later?

Or is it that most people are not using tape anymore and don't care?

Shit. My next record was going to be recorded on 2" 24-track. I guess I better buy the tape now instead of waiting until late February.

I thnk the general tape op board is quite nervous, but it being the internet and all, perhaps we have learned not to freak completely until there is more than one source. Not that i'm doubting completely.. but i've learned from the past.

and end to tape will be fucking sad though in this case.

If that report is true, it's not good. The fact that they laid off their employees that way is a bad sign. Many companies can keep functioning while restructuring under chapter 11. Look at United Airlines, for example. By locking the doors and putting up "no trespassing" signs, it looks like they are out of cash, out of credit, and haven't found anybody to invest in, buy, or even loan money in Quantegy.

I used to work at theater that was shut down this way. One day, the actors arrived at the theater to find the doors padlocked. The place never opened again, and was eventually torn down to make way for.....a parking lot.

It would be nice to think that some far-sighted person would buy the Quantegy manufacturing equipment and maybe continue manufacturing, even if on a smaller scale. Otherwise, that gear could be sold off for scap.

Dammit, I just laid out 400 bucks to get my deck repaired! I guess I'm buying a bunch of tape tomorrow...

Joel, how long before your mystery company starts making tape?

I know who the mystery company is and if this is any indication, it will be a L-O-N-G time.

Wrote this on another thread FUCKING YESTERDAY:

If this were just a matter of free choice, like airbrushes vs. oil paints or spot lighting vs. floods, the arguement would be pointless. But, there are economic forces at work. The analog format is in danger of disappearing completely. People need to hear analog and start buying tape again before it's too late.

Damm...

We eat when we're not hungry. We buy things we don't need.
