Supercollider
Sorry this is such a dorky question and all...I'm sure no one on here will know anything about this...
Does anyone know how to do GUI stuff in supercollider? I can't find any decent documentation on the web, nor is there anything useful in the help files. Anybody that knows anything should let me know...

Re: Supercollider
BUMP?
Seriously, am I the only one that uses Supercollider on this whole freakin forum?
Is that above you guys, or below you guys or whatever? How about MAX/MSP?
You guys should try out makin' tunes instead of just recordin' 'em.

Re: Supercollider
I'll check out supercollider this weekend. Thanks for the heads up.

I just downloaded the .gz file. Excuse me for being dumb. Is this the application?
Thanks again,

Re: Supercollider
I believe the gz file is an archive of some sort. When you run it, it unpacks the whole thing, and you'll get a folder called "SuperCollider_f." Inside that, you'll find the application.
I must warn you, though. The learning curve for supercollider is somewhat steep if you're not familiar with programming. I was able to catch on fairly quickly because I'd done a lot of stuff with MAX/MSP. I would recommend checking out all of the examples and help documents--it's not exactly something you can just dive right into.
Speaking of MAX/MSP, if you haven't used that, I would totally recommend it. The capabilities are seemingly endless. I'm using it for sampling in this improv group I belong to, and I'm getting some crazy sounds. If you can imagine it, you can probably build it with MAX/MSP.
Supposedly Supercollider's even better, but I'm pretty much a beginner with that.

Re: Supercollider
Hey,
I don't really have an answer for your question, but I learned SuperCollider 2 when I was studying computer music at the University of Washington. I graduated right when the new OSX version was coming out so I'm pretty clueless with that one...
Here's a couple examples of some SuperCollider that I've used. The first is off my band's album. I used SuperCollider to make a granular synthesis texture from some celeste samples (it's that whistling sound in the background):

This second song starts with more granular synthesis (I used the sax recording off the Royer mic demo CD) then goes into some vocoding with a recording of a friend of mine singing...all done in SuperCollider (and a bit in cSound):

Good luck! SuperCollider is freakin' awesome, but you need some serious dedication or programming knowledge to really get into it!
Thanks,
Josh

Re: Supercollider
dude!
Great sounding stuff. Way to bring the supercollider "A" game.
Glad to see that other tapeoppers are doing this stuff. I think we all sometimes have a tendency to go overboard worrying about tape machines and outboard gear and waves plugins, etc., etc. It's nice to hear examples of people doing some original work.
I just started reading Curtis Roads' "Computer Music Tutorial," and I'm thinking that it should be a "must-read" for all the people on this board. It's an excellent technical resource, and it's not too difficult to read. Check it out!

Re: Supercollider
Thank you for the tips and examples guys. Looks tough but I'll definitely give it a go.
