Sounds that sound like other sounds

Post by Rigsby » Mon Jan 10, 2005 5:32 am

I was shopping in Waitrose (supermarket) the other day and someone was gently putting a metal basket in a stack of metal baskets and it sounded exactly like a hi-hat closing (which is why i turned round to see what it was).

Lovely stuff.

One time I made a fake death metal song with samples of a roaring bear for vocals. It's really creepy until you realize that it's a bear not a person.

Your album's been on my list of things to download when i go to the libarary (they have broadband), should be this week, looking forward to hearing it. We also have a metal fruit basket that gets used a fair bit. With the proximity effect you can really capture some of the low end resonance which sounds really deep and full. I love all that stuff. What other unconventional things did you use on your record BOB?

The Aquarious Records mail list has been espousing a couple of metal bands
with, errr, interesting lead vocalists. Hatebeak has a parrot for vox, and Caninus has a pair of growling pit bulls.

I was on the train when the first and second conductors both announced the second station stop over the intercom ALMOST but not quite simultaenously. Before I knew what I was doing the words "delay with pitch modulation" flew into my brain.

Odd that you should ask this question today Rigsby. After retrieving a heavy winter coat from the front closet door this morning I noticed as I closed the door the latch made this nice resonating PING! sound. And I instantly started thinking about where I could use that in a song.

To answer the topic question though, those lawn and leaf bags sound more like a jazz snare when played with brushes than an actual snare. For a very deep and huge bass thump I've placed a LDC on the large wooden platform of my church sanctuary sans shockmount and bass roll-off then pounding the platform at the base of the mic stand, BOOOOOM.

Other "odd" things I've recorded for use in a song:

a hissing clothes iron

sandpaper rubbing together

breaking glass

a lawnmower

I love stuff.

Got a great melody on my pager a few years ago. For the same tune i also recorded drills and digging equipment, when they shut off and wind down they sound particularly awesome, that got used a fair bit.

I was recording piano once with the window open and this little girl outside shouted 'oihoi! Give it to me!' and it ended up being a really emotional and intergral part of the tune, so much so that i'm re-recording the tune for my record, and getting in my girlfriend's nieces to try to replicate that 'vocal'.
