I still maintain that The Cedar Room by Doves is undeniable yet there are of course others.

John Lee Hooker- Boogie Chillun'

The Isley Brothers- It's Your Thing

The Stone Roses- Fools Gold (surprised I haven't seen that one mentioned here yet)

Marvin Gaye- Inter City Blues

CCR- Heard It Through The Grapevine

Anything with Rick Danko and Levon Helm. Jesus.

Also, I second "Makes Me Wanna Holler." by Master Marvin Gaye.

It's Your Thing - Isley Brothers
Ghostwriter - RJD2

And a good friend of mine once argued, drunkenly, that Billie Jean was "invented by Quincy Jones" as "the perfect pop song" and would never be surpassed. And try as we might, no one could think of an argument for that...

Memphis Soul Stew- King Curtis- Live at the Fillmore
BB King- Anything from Completely Well or the "Well" half of Live and Well
Got to Give it Up- Hiram Bullock, Live at Manny's Car Wash (Will Lee on bass)
Bigelow 6200- Brenda Lee (old nashville 50's groove)
Sir Psycho Sexy- Chilis
Flashlight- Parliament
Slick Cat- Joe Pass (check it out, Carol kaye on bass, don't know the drummer, but it's a really funky album)
I'll take you there is killer, so is Mr. Big Stuff- Jean Knight
Business-Eminem
So many good grooves....
Someone mentioned Lady Marmalade awhile back in the thread, that's the Meters backing LaBelle on that one (didn't read all 8 pages, sorry if it was already mentioned)

ahmad jamal 'poinciana'... Vernell Fournier's part and pocket on this are amazing. everyone should own 'At the Pershing: But not for me'... one of the greatest albums ever.

True, but the poinciana groove wouldn't be what it is without Israel Crosby. Ahmad Jamal "Coast to Coast" compilation remastered on chess is FABULOUS.
It's nice to be nice to the nice.

mos def... israel rules. i think i'm gonna start listening to jazz alot again. i kinda burned out after too many lame jazz tours... jazz is the best music to play when it's really good, with the right people, and the worst music ever with less than happening players.

Yesssss, The Band.. loop that first few seconds of Up On Cripple Creek for hours of enjoyment. Or how about Van Morrison - Caravan. Pretty funky for an Irish guy.

Modern stuff... anything remixed by Kruder and Dorfmiester... or the Fila Brazilla remix of Radiohead's Climbing Up The Walls. Or Massive Attack - Angel, or Amon Tobin... but its all samples.. I guess that doesn't count. Mountain's Mississippi Queen is pretty funky.... if only they did a better job recording it. You kind of have to imagine the low-end funkiness.

Sure it counts, if the end result works, then so be it, no matter how it was put together.
You listed some of my favorite artists right there, K&D, Massive, Amon, etc...fuck yeah Amon can groove!

So, the Meters has been mentioned a gazillion times, so here's one more.
Curtis Mayfield - pretty much all of them (Freddy's Dead, however, mmm'mm....)
Isaac Hayes - Theme from Shaft
Kool & The Gang - Jungle Boogie
Quincy Jones - Soul Bossa Nova
Bill Withers - Use Me

Bucketloads more I can't think of right now, gotta go feed the cat...

If you want me to stay-Sly Stone

After a thorough search for what I had in mind and although I agree with many comments here, this would have to be the one for me.

The riff that killed Elvis.

I suggest a listen.

*Side note - Contrary to popular belief, it was not Larry Graham that performed on this track, but Rusty Allen. Its actually Rusty that is credited for bass on the entire record. Although, I have read that it was Sly's lines he was performing for the most part.
Joe Pyne (60s talk show host who sported a wooden leg) ? "So.. with your long hair, I guess that makes you a woman." Frank Zappa's response - "So.. with your wooden leg, I guess that makes you a table."
