taping shows at a venue?
say that Kristin Hersh's husband is my pal and is going to let me get access to the mixer to record her show in Chicago this weekend... Do sound reinforcement mixers use XLR out or 1/4"?? What sort of dongle do I need most likely?

Re: taping shows at a venue?
Well, it depends on what kind of mixer, some might even have RCA tape outs.
Still, board recordings aren't usually all their cracked up to be. He's mixing for the room, there isn't going to be a recording mix, is there???
I would take this opportunity to set up some nice stereo mics in a place where they won't get bumped, and have a nice spot to monitor the recording.
I run sound at a club, and if I like a band, I just tape the room, never the mix.

Well, I know board recordings are generally terrible. I have some other soundboard recordings of Kristin and they sound fine. It's just her and her guitar.
I think I will just bring an arsenal of adapters/jacks with me. Just to be sure.

HEY! doesn't clear channel have some kind of patent on recordings made live at venues?

i'd venture to say they'd either be RCA or 1/4". while it's true that he'll be mixing for the room, the sound guy may be able to give you a rough stereo mix through the output matrix. be sure to talk with the sound guy well before the show so he doesn't end up having to troubleshoot your shit while doing soundcheck or something.

Re: taping shows at a venue?
My desk has everything but RCA outs. I usually do a discreet headphone mix through the matrix, though if situation involves more sound reproduction than sound reinforcement (singer/sonwriter, hip-hop, etc...) I'll just use the main mix.
If you have a nice pair of mics, ambient miking may be better if you want to catch the vibe of the room.

How many tracks you got?
I tape shows with four tracks if I can get a stereo submix off the board, mix with stereo mics.
Three tracks for a mono off the board, stereo mics.
Played a gig last fall where the band hired a guy with a HD24 who took a direct off every board channel. Not sure how many - seven piece band with three vocalists, 6 or 7 mics on the drums... He didn't add live mics. In a perfect world, he could've mixed a pretty decent sound, maybe, but what he ultimately presented to us sounded like shit. I know we didn't sound that bad in the room.

she was the lead singer of Throwing Muses. Her step-sister, and former muse, Tanya Donelly was Belly's founder.

Re: taping shows at a venue?
looks like she's playing schubas - which is a great venue, esp for that style. i played there a week or so ago.
they have a pretty nice console (A&H i think? midas maybe??) and i'd guess 1/4" if i had to. in that room especially i'd try and get the natural sound mic'd. it's really a nice sounding room on its own, and the reinforcement is very much reinforcement and not blow your balls off rock club PA.
that said they also have that whole emusic live thing going on and record simultaneously to sell immediately after the show (if the performer signs up for it). the live thing from our show was suprisingly good, much much better than a similar recording from the metro.
