awesome crazy panning on songs.
the new u2 album has some awesome crazy panning going on... in 'vertigo' the only guitar until the bridge is super loud and panned hard left... there is NO guitar in the right speaker. it's awesome. it totally works and seems like such a cool wierd thing to do for a radio mix. i love hearing stuff like that.

I gotta go with Leigh Stevens guitar panning in the 1st 2 BLUE CHEER albums. I Love it!

Take a listen to Abbey Road with headphones. From song to song, everything shifts, even during the medley section. Drums shift from left to right; bass does too, vocals, you name it. Very cool...

Revealing my sad metal roots.
Martin Birch on Iron Maidens efforts, pans one guitar right, one left, as the guitrarists swap from playing rythmn to lead with each other within a song, it sounds very odd. Personally annoys the crap out of me, but there you go.
I wonder what he does now they have 3 guitarists?

I dont think there was a panner on that console, just a buss select, Left, Center or Right.

Ummmm... get the Warren Defever side project "New Grape" and also check out His Name Is Alive (with Dara) - Library Girl. It's amazing.

Yeah, but the result of having to put the tambourine on whatever track was available in that section of the song will make you seasick. It's like, "Oh, there's the tambourine! But wait! Now it's over here...no, I mean, it's over here...no, it's back to... no, wait a minute!"soundguy wrote:I dont think there was a panner on that console, just a buss select, Left, Center or Right.
The stereo placement on the new U2 tune is nothing new to them. Listen to "Beautiful Day." There's some ballsy positioning on that tune. Tchad Blake mixes have some nutty-ass placement, too. Check out those Latin Playboys records.

That whole album is an education in crazy ass panning.

theres something weird going on on Power of Equality with the kick drum being panned with a really short delay or something too, right?drumsound wrote:I love the double drums hard panned on "Suck my Kiss."
and i think Heartbreaker by Zeppelin has that cool guitar that is in the breakdown and just panning back and forth 2 hits left and 2 hits right. if you ever are at a bar and you notice their house system is wired with only one channel, play this song. everyone will kinda stop talking on that part and wonder where the rest of the tune is...
Miles Davis trumpet is also crazy panned (probably by him standing at the console during mixdown) on the On the Corner and i think on Bitches Brew too.

How bout crazy annoying panning?
All I can think of is Jimi Hendrix. Everyone was like, whoa, stereo? Let's pan in circles for the whole track!

his name is alive is great - really like library girl, had never heard it before.
what about the beginning of feel yourself disintegrate by the flaming lips...
or for that matter, zaireeka. pretty crazy panning from room to room if you have it set up in four rooms of a house.

Re: awesome crazy panning on songs.
I always loved the spread on "Live At Leeds." One speaker is ALL Entwhistle's bass, the other is ALL Townsend. Moon and Daltrey are in the middle. Back in 7th-8th grade I used to have this old-fashioned, third-hand, all-in-one '70s stereo that you could plug mics into the front of it, so one day I disconnected one speaker and plugged in one mic, mic'ed up my amp, grabbed a cassete, and replaced Pete Townsend's right channel with myself playing guitar for the whole LP. I mean I sucked and all, but it was great fun to play with Moon and Entwhistle for a day.
