New to NYC:internet service&long distance recommendation

Post by bassface » Thu Jan 20, 2005 12:24 pm

Finally moved in w/the girlfriend in NYC and need to stop sponging off the neighbors wifi and get our own high speed internet. This is in manhattan, WAY uptown, in inwood.

We currently have an AT&T phone line (local only) and we have cable lines in the apartment but no cable service. We want to get long distance service and high-speed internet and, of course, pay the least possible for quality service. Cable is a possibility, but we don't have a TV and wouldn't be interested in a TV/internet package unless it was so cheap it didn't matter if we didn't use the tv.

Could dump AT&T if necessary, but had a horrible experience w/MCI installation whom we finally gave up on. Open to other phone providers if it helps w/dsl deal.

What are some good deals out there?

Much obliged!

for long distance i just use 1016868... dial that and then you get a cheap rate that gets added to your regular local bill. or a cell phone. i only use 1016868 for international calls. for internet i just steal airport bandwidth from someone in my building. fun times.

Welcome!!! You will have to join us for the next beer night.

For long distance, I've always liked Working Assets, because they are a "green" company and also the free pint of Ben and Jerry's every month is nice, though its not THE cheapest by any means, they've been rather nice to deal with. http://www.workingassets.com

I can't get them in my neighborhood, but people have spoken highly of speakeasy for internet, so I will recommend them. http://www.speakeasy.com

also might check out http://www.idt.net

Hope that helps, see you at beer night.

anyone want to do a williamsburg beer hang sometime at moto? it's my regular hang and has an awesome vibe and good beer on tap. fun live music too, lots of rootsy acoustic stuff, then me wasted late at night. we just can't go on a night my girl is working or she'll never forgive me for bringing all my audio nerd friends over to drink till 5am....

First of all, I'm totally down for beernite when it happens.

Thanks for the recs, lance, but the internet places you suggested are super-expensive.

Anybody else?

Earthlink offers cable modem through Time Warner cable (no cable TV needed) for something like $35 a month. They have a 6 month intro offer for $25 a month or something. Verizon offers DSL in NYC metro area only for $30 a month as well. I have cable modem with Earthlink, and it is very fast. I don't host anything, but download times are pretty impressive.

I use IDT for phone, and have tried practically every company under the sun for phone in the city, but I'm still not 100% satisfied. There's a major line charge in NYC that makes your phone bill be at least $65 a month. Most people opt to just have a cell phone, since it ends up being a lot cheaper.

Speakeasy starts at $39/mo for 768/128. You can get VOIP for $30 which is free long distance. If you get onelink at the same time, you won't even have to get setup with the phone company. Speakeasy service, tech support and customer service are absolutely awesome - and I've been through about 5 service providers as comparison. I would never consider using anyone else.

I'll vouch for that 1010987 dealie, too.

Yeah, probably. I've never used them myself, but depends on what your needs are.

I was thinking maybe of hosting beer night at my place some time. I have a beer full of fridge and L on top of the live.
