You could make the world's largest Frippertronics setup...

]Nah.... Old Akai and Roberts decks are consumer items and are not worth anything other than as collector's items. I wouldn't freek over this auction. Now if it would be a room full of MTR-90's and A-827's, I'd be bidding.SoftSupply wrote:someone must have heard about quantegy and just given up:

Holy Crap!
I have a friend who used one of those (I can't remember which, but there are at least 4 in the pictures) as a pair of preamps. It was colored to be sure, but it had a beautiful tone; describing it is the only time I would say "warm tube sound" with a straight face. There is no other way of putting it.
If I had the money I'd buy the lot, find the 3 or 4 best sounding for preamps, and resell the rest for what I paid for the other 40.
Someone on this board has got to have the money to do this.

The sound of those old tube consumer decks is extremely pleasing and I use them for preamps for many things. The color is amazing and the warmth is extremely desirable.
I agree they're not worth anything but I disagree they're not worth their weight in gold to a TapeOpper. Even the solid state units are nice with their purely analog path. Fewer IC chips and transformer balanced in's and out's instead of opamps. Yummy!

the electronics from those tube akai and roberts decks can be converted to a tasty guitar amp very easily. just pull the electronics and solder a mains chord to the transformer. supposedly this is the richie blackmore sound.

Reminds me of the Roberts stereo deck I had in high school... I sliced and diced and looped on it, and it not only had speakers, it also had a slot for 8-track cartridges in the side.

I still use the preamps from my dad's Vietnam War-era Akai X360 (my first reel-to-reel with "Sel-Sync", which let me do mono overdubs and bounces before I could afford a Tascam multi-track). It's got some cool vibe. I also use it for tape slap echo (as you can change the speed from 1-7/8 to 3-3/4 and 7-1/2 IPS) and did tape loops when I was younger and had more patience.
Re: mother lode of open reel decks!
there was a time I was desperatly searching for a good home deck to play all the bootleg stuff I have on reels. People started clearing out their closests and giving me machines. I think I had three or four, but none worked. I'm sure the garbage men thought they were hitting the jackpot...

Doesn't anyone here read??
This auction is the collection of Phil Van Praag, his entire collection was made the subject of his book "Evolution of the Audio Recorder."
You can bet these machines are in good condition and I would advise watching further auctions of his, look what he's sold already.
