just ordered - shure sm7 and ev 635
I just ordered a Shure Sm7 and an EV 635a. They should be here in 3-4 days and I?m pretty excited. From my experience with my collection, other people's mics, and from lurking here daily it just seems to me that my money is probably better spent on things like the Sm7 or Re20, 635, 421 etc, than many of the sub $500 condensers. Opinions anyone?
Also.. anybody got any hints or secrets?

i've had my sm7 for about 6 months now. you need a good solid preamp with it with tons of gain. it has been absolutley KILLER on snare, i smile every time i hear it. suprisingly, it hasn't been picked for vocals yet, the shure ksm44 seems to win out so far. it's awesome on upright bass. works for some guitar amps.

I love the EV635a. Useful to me in a lot of places I wouldnt have thought. amps, ac gtrs, backing vox, and most recently, and most surprisingly...bass drum.
Good luck and post any cool uses you find for either one.

i believe there is a serious curve in general quality between $500-$1500. this is a broad generalzation but it seems that as you spend more in this range you get alot more than the difference between $100 and $300 or even the difference between $1500 and $3000. i think every dollar gets you less and less improvement from about $1100 up. again, this is a very broad statement and i'm not sure if this has anything to do with what you're talking about.hank hill wrote:it just seems to me that my money is probably better spent on things like the Sm7 or Re20, 635, 421 etc, than many of the sub $500 condensers.

I got it from FullCompass.comInvalidInk wrote:Where did you get the SM7 from I am considering purchasing one of them.
You have to call in and get the price because its not advertised on their website. I see them mostly for 369, but FullCompass only wants a touch over 300 for it.

Full Compass kicks ass.

I second the 635a on backing vocals and acoustic gtr. Great mic!

Used a 635A on a Leslie cabinet today for mono Hammond organ and then a Leslie guitar overdub. What a rockin' mic. Don Dixon absolutely adores these things.

'Don Dixon absolutely adores these things.'
a band i record from time to time told me to try them on amps after i had em for a few months...he used them on all the guitar amps on their record...amazing....and they just hang off the amp. i haven't heard it sound "bad" on anything...they even deal with 'bad' rooms better than most omnis...you know? flattering. some vocals the peak is a little much.

gotta agree. something about dynamics give them a bad name. they aren't esoteric ribbons...they aren't cool looking like an LDC really...and they're cheap. i use the sm7 and re20 constantly now and i still suck, but I suck a lot less.
hmm...that's my new motto. time for business cards.
later...

oh- PL20 for the re20 when you get to it. same mic...lots less...get it used...

That 635a will be a life saver if you ever need to record something outside and its windy. Its what most field newcasters use. I set up a shotgun with a zeppelin and the 635 was still quieter and betterer.
It rocks!

Re: just ordered - shure sm7 and ev 635
If you're looking for a 635a, don't forget to look for re50s as well. The re50 is the same as a 635a except it has an internal shockmount and pop filter. These are what you see the tv reporters using, 9 times out of 10. They cost more new than a 635a, but you can often find them used for less, because all the musicians/engineers know about the 635a, but not about the re50. There is a PL50 also, but unlike other EVs, it's not the same mic as the re version. .
