MF Blowout on Behringer Autocom Stereo Comps $49 - any good?

Post by trianglelines » Mon Dec 27, 2004 2:23 pm

Seems like it might be a better deal than our old whippping boy the 3630...

Anyone use one? Recommend or dismiss?

I use Behringer compression from time to time and find it a useable change of pace sometimes. It's a little noisy but it's functionality is decent. I usually break out the Behringer compression for hand percussion and sometimes a little loud electric guitar when I'm mic'ing my VOX Cambridge 2 X 10 (which is a little noisy).

Is it worth $49?

IMO, yes.

great for the club setting. I would probably skip it unless you have no comps. Its character is fairly bland for my taste. Like I said though, I have yet to see a club without at least one of these in the rack.

I have numerous Behringer pieces of gear and they are great. I have a 4 channel comp/gate that I like a lot, the only bad thing about it is that it does far too much, and I have to spend time in the manual everytime I go to set it. It does a fantastic job though, and is very transparent. It also has XLR inputs in the back too, which makes it very versitile, I originally bought it to run my drum mics into the XLRs with.

I'm looking for something to just watch out for dangerous peaks while tracking. Would I be wasting $50 on this for this purpose? I compress in the box otherwise.

For tracking peaks...I'd say just get a RNC.

I can't imagine that the Behringer is nearly as transparent.

Agreed. For $50 if you don't like it or tire of it in a few days/weeks/months you can always toss it up on eBay or something and get a decent return on it.

I can't stand them. I use them every day at work (since it's industrial video, for the most part, quality vs price is not a priority I can get much funding for).

I have a lot of behringer stuff, and it is all fantastic stuff, even if it was not so inexpensive I would buy it because I like the quality of it.
I have a quad comp/gate that is similar to the one you are talking about, and it does a great job, it is very transparent sounding. The gate works really well. The only thing I don't like about the one I have is that it does too much, it has a lot of buttons on it, (stuff like "soft knee" compression) that I have to pull the manual out ever time I use it. But as far as how it functions, I couldn't have chosen a better device.

I want some of whatever skeeter is smoking.

Hey, mabey he's the guy that went in and bought that $9,000.00 of Berry gear in one throw at GC that I've read about.

Berry may make some decent gear and what you do with the gear is more important than the gear itself, but I would never use adjectives like "fanastic".

Buy it but know it has limitations and won't sound even as good as a RNC, let alone LA2A or 1176 in a lot of cases. It's great to advise people it's ok to buy this kind of stuff, but let them know it's limitations so they don't think they're doing something wrong when it dosn't perform the same way. If it was that easy to put out cheap quality stuff, It would be everywhere....

BTW I'm not a gear smob I do own some Berry gear, but I don't prentend it even comes close to the transparency and musicality of top shelf gear, It's adaquate. There's two kinds of snobbery. Top shelf snobbery and I do everything cheap snobery.

Uhhh... ok. Each to their own.

No offense, but how many compressors have you used, and can compare to the Behringer gear, if the concept of soft knee is so foreign to you?

hello don.

save your loot. they're junk, and i doubt they're really fast enough to grab stray peaks on tracking. i'd say just lower your input levels a bit. if you're recording 24 bit there's no need to be peaking right up to zero.
