Microphones used on Zeppelin songs

Who knows. I own all the original CD releases, so the mics used on the original recordings just don't matter. They turned the albums into shit anyway when they issued the CD's. Someone may have cared in the beginning, but someone botched it all later on regardless.

I think I read somewhere they were beyer m160s. Page liked to mic the amp front and back, and maybe another a distance away. "Distance equals depth" is something he said in an interview.

I remeber seeing some neumann U67 microphones acting as the "distance" mic. I'd agree on the beyer m160 also and they were as drum over heads I have read also.

Page got some great guitar tones, but he had many tricks. His use of direct guitar with the guitar sound from the amp. I talked with Chris Huston who did 2 tracks from Zepp 2 and he said Page could just record a part and double track it in one take. Incredible. Anyway, the small amps and big amps. I think the electronics of the echoplex is part of the Pagey tone. No echo coming out but the electronics has a role it plays. Also that great phasey guitar tone, nearly impoosible to replicate because all in all, it comes down to Jimmy. He could get those sounds with any thing.

and he did, over the course of the band in different studios with different consoles on different guitars with different amps in different rooms. In the scope of this, how is some single piece of gear hardly relevant?

That's a good point.

How the hell do you do that?

It seems to me from what I've read and heard from a few people that have been in the studio with those guys, Page was not only the producer but the mixing engineer as well. And that he can flip you out a little bit when he starts bouncing tracks and mixing.

Did Eddie Kramer really have much to do with the end results on the Zep albums he worked on? Or was it mostly Jimmy Page?

Listen to the records where he worked on some of it and somebody else worked on some of it and see if you can hear s difference. I sure as hell can. The music still rocks, though, and I think that's where the consistencies of Jimmy Page tend to rear their head.

Just like when people talk about "the Bonham drum sound" with no regard to period or title. All that stuff sounds different but what sounds the most consistent is Bonham just fucking rocking like only he could. And I'm not talking about Jason.

Same goes for "the Ringo drum sound."

I remeber hearing about a pignose amp and a microphone in a shoebox for something, I was quite young when I head that.

Anyhow, since we are talking about Led Zeppelin production, I am curious what the popular opinion is of that pre-delay on the vocals of 'whole lot of love' in the middle:

"Way down inside....."

I have always believed that was tape bleed, not deliberate.
