wow, it's all crumbling so quickly. I wonder who's next.

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
all right, all right

If this is true, its not very suprising after hearing the rates that people had been getting in there for, that place was in trouble for a long time.

Lets face it, people can create great music in their homes now by buying their own gear and learning to use it. I told my wife a long time ago that I thought most of the music in the future will not involve large studios, it will mostly be done in peoples spare rooms. I think that is coming true.

When all the big studios are gone, how will record companies get pop stars into massive debt, to beholden them?

What Tape Op represents is one of the reasons it went down.

We can be proud of ourselves today...or ashamed I suppose...

Nah - proud. We aren't in it for the glory, we aren't the lucky tea boys who were standing in the right place at the right time, and we are doing our small part to kill the dinosaur of shitty music that the unwashed masses are being drowned in.

sserendipity
You got that right!
I also told my wife a while back that I think the future of music is that the days of the superstar are over. I beleive that we are headed back to a time where people rely on local live bands for entertainment, and most commerical music is going to be pretty much backround noise to life, it is going to pretty much be MUSAK.
Lets face it, the airwaves are saturated, 30 years ago to be musicially talented was something that was somewhat elite, not everyone was. Now virtuosos are a dime a dozen, and ignored by the music industry. Creativity has run it's course, the digital era has made using creative genius to get amazing sound obsolete.

That may all be true, but it is a bummer for those who really want to make a living IN music. Certainly the bedroom DIY crowd will cheer the demise of a great studio as though it also symbolizes the death of bubble-gum pop. But there are folks who don't want to spend their days behind a desk in an office building, and their evenings in their basement with the world's best guitar mic for under $100. Big recording studios and big record companies have been the retirement plan for musicians so they can eventually stop chasing after more gigs and running around the country on tours.
And let's face it, the death of the Hit Factory doesn't mean the musicians are in trouble, it just means that a lot of engineers and assistants will be out of work. That's a tragedy for a bunch of folks who would really like to be working in their chosen field.
