Colin Moulding's brain > Colin Moulding's fingers > Wal bass > direct box of some sort.

No subsitutions allowed.

I was wondering more along the lines of what gear was used. mics?, amps?, effects, di's?, compressors, limiters, eq's, etc

There was an article on Colin in Bass Player a couple years ago. If I remember corretly, he even went into a bit of detail on what basses and amps he was playing in different periods. Maybe go to their website and try searching for a back issue?

But I do remember being surprised at the myriad of basses he has used. I think his favorite at the time was some kind of Vox thru a G-K 12" combo mic'ed...

I love that guy!

Don't think the Wal made an apperarance till much after Drums and Wires.
I seem to remember a Vox Bass and maybe a older Fender short scale..?Musicmaster?.
Most/all of the tone is in his fingers

Man, XTC is one of my all time favorite bands. I am stoked there is even a question regarding them on this forum. I would love to hear about some of their gear choices, recording chains, stories from engineers/producers ect... Not really much info out there regarding that stuff that I am aware of.
I know enough to know that I don't know what I am doing.

dave gregory is a major major guitar geek (in the nicest sense of the word) and has a very detailed website about his collection. although, yea, colin played bass and all, you could probably email dave and ask. i picked his brain about amps once, he was really cool.
