New Tape Company
Got this press release this morning:
Dear Larry,
Activities?bringing analog studio tape into production as carried out by RMG International in Oosterhout, The Netherlands, are now in a status to be?disclosed. These efforts - bringing the EMTEC tape types back again to production and to the marketplace - are leading to a clear alternative and a redundancy in tape supply.
I think, this is good informatuion for the studio community.

> Their own formulation.
Well, yes.. that is the obvious answer. I'd managed to convince myself they were going to use the EMTEC formulations though.
Looking at the product listing, I notice that they don't seem to have a 467 equivalent, which rather sucks if you're running a DASH system. (Not that I do)

Re: New Tape Company
where are we going to be able to get this new emtec tape?
Re: New Tape Company
who the hell have you heard of that running a DASH system around here? that would be pretty hardcore digital vintage. I saw a sony DASH 2 track machine go for $90 on ebay recentlyjpmorris wrote:> Their own formulation.

I tell a lie.. it's a ProDigi. They're going to be even less happy about this mess than Rockfield (who are all-analogue).
Anybody want a Sony?

Re: New Tape Company
Does anyone still use DASH? I thought DTRS kinda killed DASH, and sometimes I feel like the only person in the world that still uses DTRS.jpmorris wrote:Looking at the product listing, I notice that they don't seem to have a 467 equivalent, which rather sucks if you're running a DASH system. If you can get DASH machines for $90 I should start buying them and turning them into furniture like dressers and end tables.

Re: New Tape Company
OK, so to my real post.
By summer we will have 3 companies making tape? Wow! that is great, I hope. I think if you had a small enough overhead, and companies made different enough formulas that they aren't stepping all over each other they can all make a profit.
I know Mike has got love for the tape, and it seems like the new Quantegy guy wants to reinvent Q and make them a healthy progressive company, while holding onto their Ampex heritage. But I wonder if this new company is just trying to jump in the vacancy left on Jan 3rd when Quantegy closed and make a quick buck.
Mag Tape is no longer a big commodity in the recording biz, I think the only companies that are gonna be able to survive are small operations like ATR who are making tape because they love tape, and want to keep it alive, and companies like Q who are gonna be able to have other sources of great profit that change and adapt with the market.
If you think about it this is the way most companies in the music biz survive. There are the mega corporations who survive off volume, and then there are the small companies/studios/engineers that survive because they just love music and can't do anything else.

Re: New Tape Company
and this from USRecording Media:
Who is carrying EMTEC???
How are 3 companies sustainable right now????
And to restate two questions already asked..UPDATE Feb 9, 2005: The tape is rolling in and we're painfully and slowly starting to fill our shelves. (We even have 1/4" GP9 and 457 on reels now.) Quantegy has re-instated full audio production again. Also, there definitely will be a new studio quality open reel audio tape manufacturer in Pennsylvania starting in May or early June and maybe even as early as April. They're going to be making very good tape for almost everyone from the studio through broadcast, government, and even the home recordist. We feel everything from the new tape boxes through the sound and slitting of the tape is going to have a "classic" touch to it.

All this tape...whoo hooo hooo hooo hooo! still going ATR but want high output stuff!
US recording media raised their prices when it stoped production. kinda shady.

Re: New Tape Company
i'm not saying you're wrong, it remains to be seen, but from here it seems like they're really more stepping in for emtec.nacho459 wrote:But I wonder if this new company is just trying to jump in the vacancy left on Jan 3rd when Quantegy closed and make a quick buck.
it's nice to have options, that's for sure.
