Doves (the band)

Post by Devlars » Wed Feb 09, 2005 1:06 pm

Alright people,

I have "UTFSF", I have searched far and wide on the WWW and nearly everywhere else. So my question is this:

Does anyone know, have a link to, book resource, ANYTHING about the making of Doves 1st album 'Lost Souls'. Special point of interest to me is how they achieved the ENORMOUS bass sound on track 10) The Cedar Room.

If any of you who read this and have any information whatsoever that you would also be so kind as to post then my curiosity would be peaked and thoroughly engaged.

Thank you ahead of time.

A few years ago Big Takeover did a couple page interview with them that I remember was pretty good. I don't remember if they specifically go into much about the recording of the album, though.

they record themselves. they were inspired by the late 80s dance explosion in the UK,and began as 'that sort' of band- samples, sequences, loops etc. got back into guitars somewhere down the line, but their production methods are still informed by dance music (hence the huge drum and basslines).
if i remember correctly, their studio burned down. they mixed a few of their records at a peter gabriel's studio too. gearwise, i've only ever seen their bassplayer/singer use a fender precision, played upside down (he's lefthanded).

Thank you but I suppose I should have prefaced my post by saying what I'm already aware of, namely the things you mentioned jx. They were called Sub-Sub by the way. Yes their studio did in fact burn to the ground and they were apparently evicted from another. I'm just wondering about the details of the recordings themselves. Though I'm beginning to realize that such information may not be widely available if at all.

The Doves are probably the most underrated band in the world.

Which would explain the lack of info on recording techniques....

I heard that lost souls was made in the late 90's then released years later. A lot of people compare Doves to Radiohead - but I think it has to be the other way around if the above is true.

I love that bonus track with the "Heroes and Villians" theme in it as the main part of the tune. Great stuff. And the second album kicks some serious ass too. They actually played songs from both albums a lot on the alternative radio station here in Vermont (not the college station, the cheese blink 182 station) I bought the album because I heard them on the radio! It works!

I can't wait to get my hands on the new albumn. They definitely take there time and add a lot to each recording.........The "where we're calling from" DVD has a few studio shots of them while making the last broadcast. they are mainly goofing around in the studio, but it might be of some use to you. The Eden concert performace on that DVD is a must have for any fan as well.

Hope this Helps.

I'd love to know where I could even find their DVD here in the states. I agree the new album should prove another fine album from Doves if reviews from Q music magazine are anything to go by (usually they are).

Sounds like a great article for TO. If you are so inclined, try to contact the band and see if you can do an interview with them about their recording methods. I'd love to read it.

They may be surprisingly open to some free exposure.
