It's a nine-volt, 386-based amplifier that actually kind of cranks. It has a gain pot and a volume pot and can be used as a headphone amp...and the parts, all together, only cost like ten dollars. You might well have them in your workshop.

Mine's in a homemade pine cab, covered with crushed velvet. The speaker is a 6" Jensen MOD ($15) though I have made one with a 1" Kobetone speaker (built into a Hammond stompbox case!) from Mouser and it almost sounds kind of OK! The sound is akin to a Tube Screamer with a speaker stuck on it. There's also a mod that is supposed to make it sound like a Bassman. It doesn't, but it's got some of that tubey "sag" and really reacts strongly to picking strength.

Wow, thats awesome! I'm gonna try one, it'll probably take me awhile, but I'm gonna start gathering parts this weekend. Have you tried any of the other models on the site? I really want to get into this kind of thing.

Can you make a Pentium based one?

Whaaa, you mean digital?!!? Digital sucks, man.

I just grounded everything to the board ground...input, volume pot lug 1, 9v-, and there's no significant noise. The first time I did it I forgot to send lug 1 of volume to ground, and it was really noisy and the volume didn't work. That's not marked on the layout diagram, they just figure you know.

That's one fine looking amp!

I made a stereo one to power two separate cabinets. It's pretty loud. (sorta ugly, though.)

i'm considering making a pair to feed with a chain of effects pedals that splits the sound with delay or flanger or phase shifter... i sometimes like making washy/spacey noise for a bed track.

That's how I use it- with a Boss GT-3 pedal that has stereo output. It can do some nice atmospherics.

It also works great on theremin. One channel of that amp into a 15 in speaker can make the house shake, and it's only 1/2 watt!
