It pays to be the guy everyone knows will "store" their musical gear.
Among the things that came in for "storage" that became mine:
Micro Moog
Casio CZ-5000
Marshall 1x12
Sequential Circuits Six-Trac
A few weird battery powered amps
A Peavey T-60 guitar
Everyone wins when I store their "worthless to me" musical stuff!! Send it over, I'll take care of it, and I'll let you know if I use it on a recording, too!

Once a guy asked me if he could borrow an ibanez chorus stomp box I had (paid $20 for it) for some recording sessions. He offered "an old distortion pedal" for me to use while he had my chorus pedal. The "old distortion pedal" was an original Ibanez TS808. After the recording sessions were done he said he loved the chorus pedal and asked if we could make the trade permanent.
I just blinked a few times and said, "sure..."
Did I tell this one here already? My bass player had a guy from work bring in "some old electronics box". Said he didn't know what it did but he thought it was some kind of instrument or effect, didn't want any money for it, just found it in the basement when he bought the house and wanted it out of there. Turned out to be a really early Moog Theremin. We tracked down Bob Moog and he tuned it up. It is cool as shit.

ms-16 - $400 (thanks Dwelles)
Wurli 200a - $159 at a pawn shop
2xSP c1s - free
'69 deluxe reverb - free
G4 dual 500 -free
'58 slingerland snare -$100
( then traded it and $100 more for an A&H system8 )
My favorite is my pm1000 in perfect shape for $400 from, of all places, guitar center. I even got them to throw in a free e609 silver. Also, thanks to a heads up on this board, an mxl2001 and an audio buddy for $29 from the same GC.
I thought I was pretty lucky until I read Shawn's post. Daaamn! -AE

If it makes you guys feel better (and hate me less), it looks like most of the gear that I scored will need some repairs. I want to get both the Fender amps back to stock (or close to stock). They both have had some funky work done to them, nothing that can't be fixed. Both of the Moog synths aren't working right. And one of the Echoplexs isn't working right either. I haven't even plugged in the 8-track yet.
And No, I didn't buy this stuff from my mom. And No, I didn't save a kitten from drowning.

I'm old, so some of these may or may not seem like deals, they were at the time.
A Sculley 280B two track for an LA-2 plus he gave me $100
An Ampex ATR-104 four track, that I bought for $600 for a U-87
$150 for a crate of shit at a 3M auction that contained:
1 Crown DC 300
2 Tektronix Video waveform displays
4 MCI two track headstacks (new)
2 8 track MCI headstacks (new)
1 16 track MCI headstack (new)
RCA BK-11's for $100 each, new in box RCA surplus from Herbach and Rademan in 1981
11 Green Bullets, $2 each, new in box from an Air Force auction in Duluth
an Eastman 25 16mm projector, I paid $35 at 3m auction, sold for $1200 with one phone call and help from Scott Dorsey. Well, two phone calls.

I was quite lucky to find a pair of Dynaudio M1.5's at Guitar Center about a year ago. They were used but cosmetically perfect. Not a scrach. Picked them up for $1500 for the pair. Had a blown tweeter which Dynaudio replace in 2 days for $250. So all said and done I got me a sweet pair of mains for my 12' x 14' room for $1750...
Yay me!!!!
Yay me!!!!
