what condencer mic for under 400$

over xmas i came across some extra 400.00$ so i am looking into geting a condencer mic possibly an audio technika 440. i would be mostly recording vocals, acustic guitar/electric guitar(not distorted but smooth clean electric) and piano. so before i do anything i would love some opinions on other mic's and about the 440? and about any good cheep condencer mics? rhods nt1? i need somthing bettern then what i am working with right now all i have is a sm58............... correction a vintage sm58

Count me in on the used 4047 suggestion. I like 'em a lot for a multitude of things. It's a great clear sounding mic with a bit of "heft" to the sound of it. Never spitty or brittle.

I agree with all of the AT recommends. If you have a hard time finding a used 4047 or 4033 under $400 the AT 3035 is a huge bargain new at $199.

There are very few AT mics I would not use. Simple....really.

The 4033 is much like a condenser version of an SM57.....it sounds good on everything.

If you keep your eyes open on ebay, you can find 4033s for great prices. I just picked one up for about $150, shipped. It's in pristine condition, too.

Probably already seen it. The 4047 is probably the coolest sounding AT mic. Unless I'm missing something. The 4033 is boring, but that can be good a lot of things. I'd go for that 4047 though.

out of the LD condensors i have or have used regularly that fall under the $400 mark (used) this including AT, Rhode, Oktava, CAD, studio projects, PPA....the AT 4047 is #1. I love that mic. I want a second, since it always sits in the kick tunnel when tracking a full band and used a lot on overdubs. Also great for single mic drum recording.. place it about chest high looking down at the kit about 3 feet away.. heck, i'll try the thing on everything.

MXL makes decent condensors for the price. I have the 2001, and have used it to record vocals and acoustic guitar.
