Favorite film soundtracks?

Post by Recycled_Brains » Sun Jan 15, 2006 1:21 pm

i've been really getting into film scoring and soundtracks lately. i really dig the stuff Clint Masell did for "Requiem for a Dream" and "Pi". the original score for "28 Days Later" is awesomely eery and depressing as well.

as far as soundtracks with compilations of bands, "The Crow" (1st one) has some really really good stuff on it.

.... Phillip Glass's scoring is another that stands out.

HBO's original series always have great music as well. "6 Feet Under", "Carnivale" and "Deadwood" most noteably.

and i saw that movie "Jarhead" in the theatres a bit ago, and it had "Something in the Way" by Nirvana.... sounded so fucking amazing in the theatre, loud with surround sound.

recommend me some stuff....

The Sean Penn movie "Assassination of Richard Nixon" - the soundtrack is mostly just the 2nd movement of Beethoven's fifth piano concerto over and over again. It really made a big difference in the movie, conveying a sense of pathos and striving. Of course, Beethoven is kind of a slam dunk. Anyway, this is the best example I can give of a soundtrack that really augments the onscreen drama in a film.

Oops, forgot Repo Man. Music adds to movie, also soundtrack stands on its own as an album.

2nd that Pat Garrett/Billy the Kidd.

Man, is that some good shit!

I had a cancelleation today, so I watched a movie on TV that was prety awful but had a really interesting soundtrack. It was a Dennis Leary film called "Double Whammy." Totally lame movie, but cool music. Sounded like Pell Mell meets Latin Playboys or something, only a little less sonically innovative. I've gotta find out who did the music for that.

I generally tend to like the Danny Elfman stuff, but I'm also a fan of Stewart Copeland's work, Michael Chang, and Hans Zimmer. I'm sure there's a few others I'm forgetting.

I love Mark Mothersbaugh's soundtracks for the Wes Anderson films. Especially for the Royal Tenebaums. Some of the parts have a nice french impressionist feel that's really refreshing to hear again.

Second Requiem for a Dream and Pi

Also:

In the Company of Men
Buffalo 66
Grizzly Man (Richard Thompson, Jim O'rourke, Henry Kaiser, and some others. Good DVD extra shows the sessions a bit)

I watched the Gus Van Sant movie Last Days the other day, pretty interesting music (some of which was done by the actors).

Has anyone seen Friday Night Lights? Apparently the soundtrack is by Explosions in the Sky.

Apocalypse Now....

And not just the reworking of "The End", but all the atmospheric ethereal stuff, too. Wow....gotta dig that out, now.
