Where have you been?! That's what it's all about!

A few samples have been posted in that thread.
As usual, those who have it think it is pretty cool, those who don't...
Well, I guess those who don't really don't know.

I'm interested in hearing more as well.

I had two 896HD's done, and I got them back last week. I had meant to do some A/B'ing, but Matt had a slot open up early, so I sent them off before I had a chance to record the "before" tracks.

I will tell you honestly that I can't hear a huge difference. BUT...there are some things you should know about me and my setup before you let that impact your decision too much.

1. I rarely use the built-in pre's on the 896HD's. Most of the time I'm using external preamps and bypassing the 896HD's pre's.

2. I clock to a Big Ben, so between that and my external pre's I already had a pretty good sound to begin with.

3. As I said, I didn't do any A/B testing.

Now, having said all that, I did record some drum tracks the day I got them back, and they are the best sounding drums I've ever recorded. Whether that's because of the 896HD mod I couldn't tell you, but the fact remains.

If anyone would like to hear samples of stuff straight into the 896HD's, I'd be happy to post some up. Let me know.

OK, I'll try to get a few things recorded tomorrow night, and post 'em on Friday. They will be the modded 896 only, using the built-in pre's, on its own clock, so you can get a sense of exactly what the mod sounds like.

Here is a little snippet of a rather famous Police song I put together this evening. As promised, this was recorded with no external preamps or clock, just the Black Lion-modded 896HD. Please forgive the occasional sloppy note--I only had about 30 mins to track this and was not going for accuracy.

Here's a 1.3 MB MP3, and here's an 11.6 MB WAV file if you want to hear it lossless.

Here's the list of equipment I played:

Drums, 4 tracks
Sonor Delites, 20" kick
Yamaha Maple Custom 14x5.5 snare
Various Zildjian cymbals
Audix D6 on the kick
Beyer M201 on the snare
AT4033's in X-Y on overheads

Guitar, 2 tracks
My trusty purple Steinberger GSX (with strat body and headstock--not the box guitar) into a Mesa F-30 combo. Mic'ed with an SM-7, double-tracked

Bass, 1 track
Warwick Thumb 5 into SansAmp Bass DI

(I didn't do any vocals 'cause I'm just getting over a cold and my voice still sucks.)

Processing
- Nuendo 3, using misc. UAD and Waves plugins.
- There's obviously reverb (UAD Plate 140) and compression (1176) on the drums, and some heavy EQ (Waves RenEQ) on the kick and snare. Overheads are not EQ'd or compressed.
- Bass is compressed w/LA-2A
- Bass and guitar is NOT EQ'd at all.
