Gearslutz has seen better days. I think the signal-to-noise ratio there has really taken a dive.

If i'm researching a piece of gear I check to places first. Here and gearslutz.
If it's something I can't afford, I seem to be able to find lots of information there.

It's true. Gearslutz is mostly populated by over-zealous buttholes. Most of them can't make a good recording no matter what, but they think they can and will sure talk about it a lot because they own a Neve! Neve is magic! RIGHT?!???

I've always had pretty good experiances at Gearslutz. Got helpful advice, etc. I'm not sure if they're still doing it, but the guest moderator sections were really cool. Kind of like an extended interview in TapeOp that anyone can participate in. Their off topic section really kept me entertained for a while. Some very weird, strong, virulent opinoins in that crowd.
I will confess, however, I haven't been there much since TOMB came back.

i think it's a great place to buy shit, if you're in the market. people take their "reps" over there very seriously, so you typically don't get screwed. at least that's my experience.

I go to both and take both with a grain of salt. With GS you seem to find lots of high and mighty opinions about an art not a science. I like both and get good info on both and some interesting reading when I have time. I go to tapeop more because of the internet filtering here at work.

I think like any online message board, there is a fair amount of BS on there. Charlie Bolois put it to me best: "You're an expert on the internet when you say you're an expert..."

If you can sift through the BS and ignore the brokers, its a good forum.

I like this board because of stuff like this. I was a huge fan of his back when I was selling shoes not too far from you in Plattsburgh NY in 1979. Saw a great show with him at SUNY Platsburgh right around then.

I'm in the minority at Gearslutz; I'm a newb, a student, and a female.
For the most part the replies I've gotten were helpfull but I mostly do a lot of reading, because most topics repeat themselves a thousand times.

There are definetly some assholes/bigshots, but you learn to kinda sift through that.

For the information I'd say it doesn't hurt to read the forums, it can be a pain sometimes though since theres like a million posts a day. (exagerating i know)

I love Tape Op. Here, I feel like I can take my limited gear and limited knowledge and still create something cool and musical. While Tape Op was down and I was mainly reading gearslutz I started to really obsess about my lack of nice gear. I had to get off the net and back into the studio to reset.

On the other hand, I did get to have some of my questions answered directly by Michael Brauer who mixed some of my favorite albums; Grandaddy's Sumday, the New Radicals etc. That was very cool. Reading the guest forums gave me tons and tons of great advice. That's definitely my favorite part of Gearslutz but in general Tape Op feels more homey.

i checked yesterday at 9pm checked today at Noon and 300 new posts...

i was interested in 10 of them...

signal to noise indeed...its getting pretty tough...

I like Gearslutz, but from what ive seen its mostly about gear and id rather talk about recording techniques. I get more of that here.

Not that there is anything wrong with gear.... hah.
