Seventh Circle Audio

Post by TV Lenny » Wed Mar 01, 2006 11:19 am

Can anyone tell me the sound quality of Seventh Circle's mic pre's? Are they worth looking into or is there a better place to find a DIY high quality pre?

I know a lot of people here will highly recommend Scott Hamptone's DIY preamps.

Use the search function- there are 118 topics that mention Seventh Circle.

People seem to like them and Hamptone- it will just depend on what you're after, I would think.

I have heard a lot of positive comments on both of them. The Hamptone is self-contained with power supply and chassis, so there is less planning to do. The Seventh Circle stuff is more open-ended and can be configured differently, but they don't offer a tube pre.

I wouldn't imagine you could go wrong with either of them.
not to worry, just keep tracking....

Thanks Everyone. I am going to go with Seventh Circle this time. I like the idea of being able to add multiple different sounding pre's in one lunchbox. But I am planning on building the JFET Hamptone later on. Which then I'm sure will lead to the tube version.

Give me $10,000 and send me back to 1959.-Mike Wheeler

Tom,

You will not be disappointed. I own all 4 flavors of SCA, and they are outstanding. I very rarely track with anything else these days - unless I run out of SCA.

Well worth twice what you pay for them!

I built an N72, and absolutely love it. Next up is a C84. Someday, I'll try the Hamptone.

I have a pair of N72's and a pair of A12's - both stellar - highly recommended and a lot of fun to build.

I've got an N72 and a couple A12's, and have had both hamptones.

For some reason, I like the other Neve clones a lot more than the n72. Specifically, the Chandler LTD-1, but it's also a 1073 (and not 1272) reproduction. Let the flaming/ridicule begin, but there's a lot to be said for that 3rd gain stage.

Highly, highly, highly recommend the a12's. They sound huge but don't go crazy in the low mids...they kinda mix themselves. :D

The JFET is sweet. The tube (I had the LCMP, and regret selling it to friend/studio) is as good as it gets...sounds HUGE but balanced and hi-fi. Super "honest" sounding pre, unlike the Neve stuff which is beautiful in a sort of supernatural way.
