SM57 mod
I just did the 57 mod in the new tape op. It breathes fresh air into a mic that I could bear to use anymore. The article said "less honk" and I thought that was a great way to describe it. I havnt actually put it up to a real instrument yet though. I did it at midnight last night and just kind of talked into it and switched to a regular 57.
Everyone should do this!

Yeah, no kidding. I did a really simple test with the mics today. I just mic'd a speaker that had comercial music playing through it. I don't know that I noticed any more low end, but it seemed a little tighter and (cliche) "punchier" to me...Almost like the dampning factor was helped out. The top end was a little more "airy" or extended like. The particular song coming through the mic'd speaker was a male vocalist. I could really notice most of the difference in that frequency range. The vocal was a little less nasally sounding through the MOD57. I noticed about the same 12dB gain loss that was mentioned earlier. I compensated by just normalizing both tracks to be sure that level wasn't the only thing I noticed different. It's a pretty cool mod. I would think it might be cool on rock vox, under snare mics and toms even. I plan to run some frequency sweep tests later today on the 2 mics.

Ok, I played around quite abit this evening and found that the mod57 at equal C weighted RMS to the SM57 exhibits about 4dB extra @50Hz and about 5-6dB lift around 7-10Khz. The mids are really almost identical as far as freqency response. I also noticed that spoken words into the mod tend to pop p's less dramaticaly. I'm not sure why that would happen, but it is a pretty big difference. The difference can be heard when setting 2 capsules really close and inverting the phase on one. The P's are still there from the SM and you also hear a lot of highs that the modded version puts out. It's a cool little thing.

The folks over at the lab (diy forum) are discussing the pluses and minuses of doing this. It's interesting to get a little more down and dirty with the details. If you're going to do this, I highly recommend checking this thread out.

I for one am proud to say that I love my 57's as is. I wouldn't mind trying this mod, but as some of the folks at the lab are suggesting, I think I'd rather just put a different/better transformer in there, as opposed to just taking it out.
