Best Distortion Pedal for $50
Best Distortion Pedal for $50
been using an Analogman TS9 for distortion, but lately i've wanted a more pure distortion pedal rather than just a tube screamer. there are so many inexpensive distortion pedals out there. can anyone recoomend one over another?
thanks.
thanks.

You can usually get a Big Muff Pi used for around $50. Or you could buy 4 Arion Tubulators for that price. The best $12 distortion pedal out there.

I thought the Danelectro FAB Distortion sounded great for $15. YMMV.
They also have an overdrive and a "Metal Effect" pedal in the line.
And I agree with hitting the pawn shops.

ever think about "rolling your own?"
Cost of parts: about $50 if you use all the BEST stuff. You can have a boutique-quality pedal in your budget if you have a little time to spare and know which end of the soldering iron to hold. And then the kids coming up to the stage to look at your "rig" are dumbfounded by the great-sounding plain grey metal box. And the kids coming to your studio to record are amazed by the great sounding 'mystery box' and think yr the shit when you tell 'em you made it.
Look at www.generalguitargadgets.com for a great resource for building pedals... the guy sells PCBs for a nominal charge (like 10 or 15 bucks) and has schematics, well-drawn board layouts, bills of materials, and build instructions on his site free for downloading. And not just dirt boxes but other stuff as well.
I built a TS-808 clone with true bypass, an extra diode for asymmetrical clipping, and a couple of changed cap values for more low-end and less midrange for about 50 bux.
