royer price hike
Geez - I was literally going to pull the trigger on an R121 purchase today, and hopped online only to notice that in the last 24 hours these mics have jumped in price to $1395.00 street.
Yesterday's $1100.00 price was a stretch, but now it's a deal breaker.
You think it's justified?
--Disappointed

Make that $1295.00 street - 2 hundred more than previously.

Companies have price increases. It's called inflation. It happens. It's a bummer when it happens right around the time you've been saving up for something, but it happens.
Buy it from Full Compass. They pretty much rock.
Also, the Syteks could be $1400 and it would still be a good deal.

The price increases you are seeing, and will be seeing, are mostly because of the cost of metal work. The price of metal has gone up dramatically of late. Also, anything made with petroleum has been going up. This includes foam for cases etc...
All of this is mostly due to the success of Chinese manufacturing in all industries. They are buying up all the raw materials they can get a hold of, driving up all the world markets. So if by "is it justified" you mean is there a reason behind it, the answer is yes.

AEA
The AEA mics are really well priced.
Just curious, is there an AEA model similar to the R121?
Thanks,
- Jim

The cost of copper has SKYROCKETED in the last few years. Ask any plumber and you'll probably get an earful...
I dunno man, I remember when those things were $800-900 and that was killer. At $1400 they're still good mics but I'd have to consider other things if I had a limited mic locker.
They're great on somethings but not everything.
The new AEA...R92 I think...the one that's like $1000 or so is a pretty good mic. It's a bit brighter then a 121 but'll still take the SPL.

Right on, but what else do you use them on?Meriphew wrote:I think the 121's are the way to go if you're putting it on amps/cabs.
They're a little dark for piano, vocals & drum overheads/room.
Brass & woodwinds, sure...I record A LOT of guitar and they do sound great there but I'm just as happy with lots of other mics that don't cost $1400 each, even in combinations! LOL
I use it solely for amps/cabs. Maybe in the future I'll pop it on something else, but for now it lives it's entire life miking amps.jmoose wrote:Right on, but what else do you use them on?Meriphew wrote:I think the 121's are the way to go if you're putting it on amps/cabs.

so...
So you folks that own the r-121 - would you say that it is 'natural' sounding as advertised? Does it sound like what your ears hear, like it's advertised? This is important to me. It seems if this were true, people would find it a bit more versatile.
Thanks,
John
