I don't recall seeing this posted yet. It's an article from Mix mag with lots of cool details about Tool's latest album.

Interviews with Joe Barresi and Bob Ludwig on making Tool's "10,000 Days"

Here's a quote from the article in regards to a topic that gets a lot of play around here:

Even though Ludwig has mastered countless projects, he gets excited about Tool albums. "They're a great combination of heaviness and yet huge dynamic range," he says. "They're one band that came in, and I think Danny said, 'We don't care if we're the loudest thing on the radio. We just want you to maintain our dynamics.' You have to really respect that in a band."

that's what i was thinking. i haven't read the article in a while, but i vaguely remember something about 3 levels of room mics. must be nice.

i was so disapointed with this album. they are, probably, my favorite band. with this album, everything is so squashed. boring. they shouldve stayed with their old producer.

it's a good record, but it's no lateralus.

It was cool they tracked analog at 30ips.

However, I was disappointed that Bob mastered it to 24bit/96k then SRC'd to 44.1k for CD. I understand the reason for 96, to preserve the highest fidelity for future formats, but why not go 44.1 and 96 simultaneously? Surely Ludwig has the facilities to master to 2 sources.

i think this album sounds fantastic. i've been hearing a lot about how low the vocals are mixed, but i'm actually really into that aspect. i don't think they're "low" at all.... blended well would be the terms i would use. i think the vocals sound better on this album than any of the previous, both in performance and the sound itself. they sound so intimate and detailed in the quieter parts, and Maynard's harmonies are outstanding.

the guitar sound is very similar to the Aenima record to my ears, which is excellent.

the play between the drums and bass really took a step up on the record as well. i think touring w/ Meshuggah had a big influence on some parts of the album.

all in all, this 10,000 days has taken a place right next to Aenima as my favorite Tool album(s).

agreed.
david bottrill, the previous producer/engineer was/is far more superior to the work of joe barressi did for the latest record. bottrill has a far more better grasp on spacious recording and mixing, especially in the dynamics side of things!
plus he's a better guy overall personality-wise!

I wasn't a TOOL fan until I heard that album. It's one of the best rock recordings in a long time. I kinda dig how it sounds like they use auto-tune as an effect rather then to just "auto-tune" haha

I agree, Bottrill's work was much better. The last 2 records, especially "Aenima" had more space, dynamics, and the tones were alot better. The new record has the same old boring guitar and drums sounds as everyone else. The most interesting thing on the new record is the bass sounds. His tone and the effects he uses are great.

i'll disagree on the comments about the "same old boring tones." the bass tone is the best i've heard so far on a tool album. and i think the guitar sounds are superb. especially the opening riff to 'jambi.' that is just terrifying in a very good way.
