Favorite cheap comps to slam

Post by JASIII » Thu Oct 26, 2006 9:34 am

By that I mean, to really crush things with, not talk shit about behind it's back. Not subtle, transparent compression, but really crunching things like room mics. What cheap(ish) comps have you had the most pleasing results with and in what application? I guess plugins can count too, but only if they are cheap or free.

I dig the microlimiter for making industrial sounding snare drums. Input and output as high as you can stand the hiss and noise, return set all the way fast.

i like the danelectro mini green compressor stomp box......it was $19.99 and it smashes the shit out of a room mic (any room mic, it even sounded cool w/ a ev635A in front of a drumset).

another metal guitar tip is to put a fan in front of you while you play, so it blows your stupid long hair around like the solo is BLOWING YOU AWAY because you're a fucking tool.

There's a Furman compressor (model #?) that is really nasty and aggressive...
And cheap... :)

I've been using my (gulp) Urei 535 7-band graphic eq to crush stuff. I found it really cheap and liked it because it said Urei. I had no idea what I was going to do with it, so I just made some pigtails and threw signal into it. The gain was way too hot and it sounded all squashed. Awesome squashed. It's like a distressor, but not as cool...or expensive. It really does compress signal...I don't really know why. It doesn't seem to actually pass a level higher than +4, so it doesn't really clip. I dunno, works for me.

Pretty much to run a mono room mic for drums through it. That's pretty much all I've tried so far, but I like the way it sounds smashed through that comp.

I should add that I heard about this comp in a post by Mr. Joel Hamilton, which was what led me to buy one. He likened it to a poor man's Distressor and had a magic formula for smashing drums/bass through it.

I just recently bought an Ashly SC-50 and while I've only used it a few times (and mostly just trying to see what it sounds like and what it's useful with), it sounds pretty badass squashing the hell out of a bass or a room mic. You can push it into breakup as well; it's a pretty damn cool little box. I think mine was $100.

I've also heard that an ART ProVLA will do neat things when pushed pretty hard. That's hearsay, though.
