what is the musical equivalent of Impressionism?

I don't know about that. You ask the average Joe whether "Androgenous Mind" is a song and he'll say yes. Ask him if it's music, and he'll say yeah, albeit noisy and dirty. Ask someone is Number 5 a painting and they'll say yes. Ask them if it's art, who knows what they'd say. Who cares.

Bands like Black Dice or Wolf Eyes come to mind when I think of a musical Jackson Pollock.

I should point out with all this Pollack talk that, just as there was an impressionist movement in music with debussy, ravel, etc, there was also an expressionist movement with Webern, Schoenberg, Berg, etc.

When Katrina's last breath came through town, we tried like idiots tracking an "impressionistic" piece in the tin siding warehouse that is my studio...came out more WL/WH era V.U. than anything: V.U. does not sound like Impressionism looks...unless maybe "Olympia" - or was that "pre-impressionism" or something?
I think impressionism, i think Morisot and Monet and how their stuff looks like they always stopped one brushstroke short of completion. Maybe Oar? but then you start begging comparisons to Studio in the South era van Gogh, which was defo very post-ish...
are we talking more in terms of pallette or composition?
what's a good preamp for getting vibrant pastel sounds? Cos all mine come out sounding like that sat. afternoon PBS show (the chick, not afro dude...)

i think the best musical example of impressionism, if you want to really get into specifics, is "cathedrale engloutie," out of debussy's prelude book 1, no. 10. some of ravel's stuff that people equate with impressionism--his string quartets, for example--don't seem languid or fluid enough to me. they're more like pointillism, or other post-impressionist movements. satie's little nocturnes are pretty exemplary, too.

i agree with whoever mentioned my bloody valentine and brian eno's more ambient stuff as modern equivalents. i love the books, but i don't think they qualify. maybe "the lemon of pink" does, and "lost and safe" and "thought for food" don't? to end on a hypocritical note, genres are silly.

Sunken Cathedral is amazing. I've heard maybe a dozen recordings of the Preludes, and my favorite by far has to be the old Walter Geiseking recordings. It sounds like when it was recorded (about 50 years ago... mono?) but the performances are so soulful and amazing.

I read that Satie was supposedly opposed to Impressionism.

More recently the french band Air come to mind, not saying that I particularly like them. Mind you, I don't particularly like impressionist painting either.
