I have one mono drum overhead right now and I want to get a odd effect with it. Something along the lines of a really smashed sound. I know what I want my final product to sound like but I am having trouble getting there.
I'd assume I start with a low threshold so everything is compressed and a strong ratio to make sure it's very level. But do I want slower or faster attack and release times?

I like fast attack and release for smashing. You might try a parallel compressor, smashed hard and fast.

nothing wrong with a little touch of preamp crunch too for extra crispiness.

Sansamps and distortion pedals can be pretty wild... But if you're just going for a real pumpy compressor thing, I'd go with a fast attack and a med-fast release. Play with the release time, and see if you can get it to pump in time with the song.

Sledgehammer?
Sorry, couldn't resist. My drumset could use to be smashed this way.
