Drum Macines-alternatives to 808 & Linn

Post by generate » Sun Dec 03, 2006 7:17 pm

I'm looking for a drum machine, old school style. I'd really like the Roland 808 or the LinnDrum but i'm not willing to spend the $1000 that they seem to be these days. Can anyone recommend a good alternative within $500?
thanks!
James

If you can track down an old Oberheim... DMX or DX. They're fun.

http://www.radio-valkyrie.com/ao/aoindex.htm - download the new record (free is an option!) or get it on CD.

If you are really a cheapskate the old Grooveboxes are a good way to get pretty faithful repros of the older Roland boxes at very low price

I've seen MPC's go for just a little more than this. Sometimes $600 or so. I picked up a 3000 & a 2000xl for less than $500 combined. They're few and far between, but the deals do exist.

I love my DMX. You can get it modded to have an extra set of EPROMS, doubling your onboard sounds. And you can swap in new EPROMS anytime.

There is a guy, (and if I can find the info, I'll post it) who does the mods and also burns custom EPROMS, so an 808 kit is an option.

That said, as much as I love my Oberheim, it wouldn't be nearly as useful as an MPC if you didn't have other drum machines.

Around Thanksgiving, Guitar center was selling the new black MPC1000s for like $749. I'd bet that you could expect the same kind of deal around the hoildays.

I just picked up an MPC1000 and put Linn and 808 samples on it. The samples are a free download at Akai's site.

After using the SR-16 exclusively for 15 years I thought it was time for an upgrade. Now someone needs to put out SR-16 samples for the MPC.

What's stopping you. Really though, would anyone use these?

I've got a Boss DR-770 with bad 808/909 samples, but it just ain't the same. And all the other sounds on it suck too. The problem with sample based Analog Drum Machines is you can't edit any of the parameters real-time. I need to get starting on a fully customizable MPC style drum machine with lots of knobs.

Mine is very noisy, as in background noise.

The Roland R8 (or even better the R8 mk II) is very cool, and you can add soundcards as well for more sounds.

you can find the entire SR-16 library here, never hurts to have too many different drum samples:

i go back and forth between the MPC and TR-808/909.... the Rolands give you a certain feel, but limited manipulation compared to an MPC with TR-x0x samples (or the multitude of x0x samples that are off records that have thier own character).

http://machines.hyperreal.org/samples.html for SR-16 samples and about a billion more...
I still like my Roland TR626 (same sounds, I think, as Big Black's Roland)
