recommend a good omni dynamic

Post by JamesHE » Wed Jan 31, 2007 7:06 pm

something old or new. But I'm more intrested to see what newer one's people like. I know the old EV's are nice, which models? Are there any that are still in production today?
What about from the AT line? Beyer?

I would like to use it on whatever it sounds good on. Not really a specific application, I'd just like to experiment, and an omni dynamic mic is something I've never experimented with.

I would consider the EV 635A as a great omni dynamic. It's geared toward voice, so it doesn't have real low bottom or real sizzly highs, but it has a really forward sounding midrange which makes this one a favorite for micing guitar amps.

You can find them used pretty cheap as they've been around forever and they're still being made.

EV 635a - i love mine real close up on guitar cabs with a royer a foot and half back or so, and in the center of a drumkit.

Second on the 635a. This is a great mic on guitar cabs. Also works as a room mic, snare (shell), and vocal (sometimes).
Also look for -
Shure VP64 - this is Shure version of the 635a. Sounds just as good only different. If you can find a used one they can be had for cheap.
Shure 535 - this is an older mic, 50's, 60's era. It's got more high end sizzle than the 635a and VP64.
EV 636 - This is an older EV mic, not as good as the any of the above in my opinion but still usefull. There's millions of them out there and they can be had cheap (sometimes).

635a is cool. EV 655 and RE55 have wider freq. response. They're more expensive. 654, DO56.

Shure sm76 is a great mic. 30-20khz.

Yes on the above models. We have the Shure 535's and they can be very cool. I dunno about "sizzle", but they have more mid and top than bottom.

Also, just about any older mic marked as a lavalier mic is gonna be omni. One problem with old lav's is lower output than other dynamics, but the positive side of that is they tend to reject distant sounds well.
I thought this club was for musicians. Who let the drummer in here??

EV655Cs are really nice mics.....

Also the EV 654 (I think that's the #)...

Avenson STO-2

They are very neutral and open (obviously) mic. It pretty much sounds like what you put infront of it and they room it is in.

It's weird that we have very few American dynamic omnis here in Europe. The only mike that immediately came came to my mind was the Sennheiser MD-21, which is as far as I know the omni version of a MD421.

The EV RE-55 totally sucks. No one should use them. Except me.

If anyone is selling one, let me know.
