Are you an artist or an entertainer?

Post by JamesHE » Sun Mar 04, 2007 11:37 pm

or are you Prince and do both amazingly well?

or are you a characture of either?

What popular (or not so popular) musicians do you consider artists? entertainers? Who do you look up to more? Which do you aspire to be?

I'll give an opinion. maybe it's true. these are just off the top of my head.

artist - Tom Waits

entertainer - Neil Diamond

artist - Diamanda Galas

entertainer - Celiene Dion

Bad artist - Meatloaf

Bad entertainer - Marilyn Manson

So entertaining he's an artist - David Lee Roth (or was)

So artful he's entertaining - Mike Patton

artist - Madonna

entertainer - Britney Spears

you get the idea. you can play too.

And as far as I know, I'm an artist - cause I damn sure ain't entertaining!

very subjective.

like example. celine dion. i really don't find her very entertaining at all. but i do respect her technical ability. so i'm not sure what you would call that.

maybe you should start another category.

I take issue with the dualism assumed by the question. Why a binary state? What is the purpose of art? What is the purpose of entertainment. I think there are too many unstated assumptions to go forward with this line of inquisition.

How about rephrasing the question to "Do you aspire to be an artist or a celebrity?"
