AKG D12 help
Does anyone out there have any snippets or samples of tracks recorded with AKG D12's.
I have one that's been sitting for a while, and I think it may not sound right. But I'm not sure that I've ever heard a good one....
?
Thanks.

The three songs with drum-set on Backyard Tire Fire's Myspace page have a D12e on bass drum inside.
On The Artist Formally Known As Vince's Myspace page most of the right side guitars were done with the same D12e or an SM7(the left side mic). The BD may be the d12e on that one too, I forget.
I know its myspace but those are some easy access stuff for you to hear...

i've found that my D12E tends to be accenting the midrange a little more than i thought - especially on reamping bass cabinets - but sounds good on kicks, i can see with a little EQ, boosting the low harmonics around 100.

i have one that i picked up last year and it can be a little rattley at times - i've heard a similar sound on re-20's too. something to do with the way the capsule is mounted inside or something. is that the sound you are talking about?
i first heard the D12 in a nice studio as an outside kick mic and had always assumed therefore that it was a deep fat sound but since getting mine i have learned that it's more of a mid sound. i have seen other engineers
who prefer it on the inside of the kick.
i seem to swap it around on inside/outside and bass amps depending
on the style or sound we are going for.
so far my fav use has been on an ampeg b15. smoooooooth.

D12, or, D12e they are very different sounding mics? Which one?
D12 was very good and you have to roll off low end cuz that's all it has, not much top at all. The D12 came in to stop complaints about that. It had more top but still a lot of lows. Then the D112 was the first in the series to "not need much EQing". HA.

mine is a d12e and it's a little mid-range-y.
I had a rattle too, but I fixed it (for the most part). The motor hangs from 4 strips (springs), and mine were bent, but unevenly so the body (and the plastic resonator thingie) vibrated against the strips. I spent a saturday afternoon trying to straighten the strips and the rattle went away. If all of the plastic pieces are intact, you should be able to get rid of the rattle. I read somewhere that little metal shavings get in the magnet and cause noises too, but I didn't see any in mine. Also, I don't store it on its side anymore.
