1000$ vocal mic

ive searched and would like to get some current perspective.

I have ..

bluebird
royer tube mod LDC
sm57
sm7
i5
beta 52
shinybox
etc..

and id like to get a 'gold channel' smooth vintagy sounding LDC that will work with a somewhat wide range of voices..

so far choices are

blueberry
u195
c414

any help is appreciated...

im thinking thats going to sound similar to my royer modded mxl v67. he takes chinese capsules and builts his tube circuits in them for the mojave. his probably sounds better than mine but not different.

i noticed you have a ton of neumann. does the charter get used more than those pieces? (is it better suited to a variaty of voices)

Not one of the neumann's I have cost anywhere near 1k.

The charter oak is a great mic, and I throw the GTMD1a up ALL the time for vocals along side of U47's and M49's and U67's... The GT really is a great, great microphone. The original MD 1a. I dont know anything about the reissue.

I've used the blueberry and u195, and of the two I'd say the u195 is more versatile by far. I haven't used any of the 414s, so I'm leaving that out.

How much does a Brauner Phantom C cost in the states? You can get one for 1K here in Germany. It's a very open and modern sounding mic. Not "modern" in harsh way, it has a very pleasend and transparent top end. Great for glossy pop voices.
The old GT MD1 is very different. I'd say it's more of a rock mic. Mine gets used a lot.

Gefell UM70s. Used they go between $700 - $1000. These are great for lots of applcications besides vocals.

actually picked up a piar of e100's original models for 200. can't find that GT mic. is it fairly rare?

i found myself in a similar situation about a year ago. (except i was also looking for a pair of LDCs.)

i went to the guitar center (blushes) in new york and spent four hours auditioning the following mics:

U195
TLM49 (no thanks)
TLM103
M147 (much more expensive)
K2

The neumanns were too hyped in the top end i felt, especially the TLM49, which i feel would be useless in almost all applications except for the occasional vocal. The U195 is the one i ended up buying: great on vocals, incredible on kick, room mic for drums, guitar amp, bass amp, etc.

and with the fat switch on it you can alter the sound (and often it suits the source better... beefy)

In the sub1000 dollar range i don't think it can be beat if you're looking for something versatile that also sounds great on vocals.

I used a UM70s that my friend owns in sessions over the past year and it is really nice. Great for instruments, room micing (drums on omni), vocals... excels at vocals and acoustic instruments.

Seriously, these mics are no joke. But seriously don't pay too much, or you'll drive the price up!

The MV692 preamps will accomodate the UM70 capsules.

They work on 12V phantom... anyone know if 48V will damage them??? What's the deal with 12V phantom, anyway?

ps. have you considered the red type B with interchangable capsules?

you could get the type B with the B7 capsule (47) for about 950 and then further down the road buy more capsules... more sounds... etc.
