is this a joke? at4050 shockmounts...

i'd heard these things had been shipping with cheaper, flimsier shockmounts than they used to, and seen people buying the old ones off ebay. but man, i just spent 1200 on two of these things brand new, and i'm astounded at just how bad this one is.

anybody have any suggestions on working around this? i'd like to, you know, be able to angle these things. what do you stuff in there?

also, congratulate me on my purchase of two brand new 4050's and an re20! bsw 10%, y'all.

I can't help with the first part of your post, but I am happy to congratulate you (and pitifully envy you at the same time).

I have to ask; What is it about the shockmounts that is so bad?

All I know is that I have heard that the new ones blow, but I have not experienced them myself or know specifics. The old-skool one that came with my 4047sv is the bee's knees.

Maybe try:

That's the one was provided with my 4047sv and it's excellent. Very sturdy.

i concur the 4050 shockmount is lame. I don't get it. It makes me feel stupid. It's hard to get the mic in and out and I'm always afraid i'm gonna break the rubber band.

Well,

If you decide to just lose the shockmount, Sweetwater finally got those Studio Project mounts back in stock. SPSK I think is the model number. They're for the SP C series mics, and I think they'd fid the 4050's. They're about $25 I think, and built better than my U195 mount, and they fit my U195.

If the problem is that the whole thing starts to fall asleep at the joint where they connect to the stand, somebody said to put a rubber washer in there one time. That makes a lot of sense, though I havn't tried it.

for those wondering... what i received today has nothing but two rubber bands at the bottom that kind let the xlr barrel fit through and then hold the body up. that seems to be all there is...

you're supposed to wrap those rubber bands around the body of the mic. That'll hold it in place. I have the same mount that came with my 4033's... They're a little cheap but they work fine.

yeah, those are what I had for my 4050, 4040, 4033. I was always scared that the mic could simply fall thru that single band wrapped around the body...

I think that those are a great design... funny.

there are actually two rubber bands, the one in the top is around the perimeter of the opening, and corresponds to the ring around the body of the mic just below the windscreen.... the rubber band at the bottom just holds it from wobbling... I see many people make the mistake of putting the mic in upside down, so that the 'free' rubber band is doing most of the holding, which is wrong, and feels flimsy... the mic kinda flops around.

but, if you put it in right, it should be a really good snug fit. and it's nice becuase you can just pull the mic out of it's shockmount, no screws.

I hate the AT shockmounts - I can not understand all the praise for them. I find the screw-in or clamp on mounts way easier to use and just as if not more reliable. I frequently use my old AKG c3000b mount on my AT mics, works pretty well.

FWIW if it doesn't absolutely have to be a shockmount the oktava mk012 clips are great for the AT 40 series mics. I use them on my 4033's when I do the XY config thing.
