Qauntum Audio Labs

Post by thearnicasync » Fri Jun 30, 2006 1:37 pm

I picked up a QAL, 10 channel board off of craigslist in Portland, OR the other day, and I'm dying for schematic!

I absolutely love the way it sounds...big without mud, and very well chosen fixed eq. Bottom line is I want to put whatever I need into it to make it perfect.

Fortunately, the ICs are all socketed...easily swapped. Sadly, one channel has a grounding problem, and the stereo out ("program") is quiet on the left channel. Not such a biggie, if I was only using the mixer as a sidecar (psyched...cinemag transx on all mic input channels..six), but I'd really like to get this thing to spec (or better, perhaps, with new opamps) and use it as the hub of my home daw set up.

Sorry...to the ponit: Anyone know of a genius pro audio person that could troubleshoot some basic issues and reccomend a opamp swap in the pacific northwest? I can drive the mixer a few hours in any direction from Portland, and I'll put whatever I need to ($) into it to get it running.

The rub is that I don't have a schematic, nor can I find ANYthing on the web...

Please gawd, let their be a savior for favorite new piece of gear.

I don't know if this will help or not, but there's a discussion of Quantum boards in this thread. Might be a source for at least a block diagram. Good luck!

I also have a Quantum console (although a bit bigger -- 20x8x16), and I have owned some 4-5 Quantum mixers over the past 12 years.

Documentation is almost non-existent. Quantum was located out of Glendale, CA (near LA) and folded sometime in the 80s. I think the original owner died and that was it for the company.

I may be way off mark but I think Steve Firlotte of Inward Connections was a former Quantum employee/designer.

They had so many variations of desks for studio, live, and broadcast use. Much of the later Quantum products were aimed at the broadcast industry.

In the right hands your mixer can be modded. Aside from the opamps, you can drop Jensen xformers in there, and a recap would definitely help at this point.

I have a Quantum Audio Lab 28 channel (strips) board stereo or quadrophonic output, mixdown/echo strip. The power supply has QM500 on it (+- 16 and 48 volts).

This appears to be a studio board as it has talkback capabilities, large and small speaker/amp outs, mulitple in's/out's, a patch panel, 28 meters.

It's vintage all rght. I may recondition it or sell it.

Any body have any literature/schematics/tips to share??

Also I bought one. Here's the deal:

I was able to get some scematics for a board similar to mine, but not my exact board.

Anyone in LA want to come over and show me how to get inside this thing, clean it up, re-cap or whatever needs to be done? Holler!

Good luck!

I'm sure there has to be an extremely good audio-nut tech out there somewhere around Portland... Maybe some of the Portland-based TapeOp members have a great recommendation? If not, the closest to you that I know of is right here in Sacramento, CA. John McCormack of Rainbow Electronics has done quite a few things for me and I have a few innovative projects for him within the next month or two! http://www.rainbowelectronics.net
