Lately,
Performing really slow shaker parts w/ one of those tiny eggs and then pitching it down w/ the crappy built in pitch shifter in Tracktion. Add a little verb and it sounds like a big ole' guiro and you didn't have damage your arm trying to shake it so damn slow.
Lo-fi rev send: reamping vox/toms/guitars to Fender deluxe w/ verb on max and mic it M/S (low pass the return).
Trigger an electronic kick drum sample, pitch shift it to the tonic of the tune, blend in.

Killer Kick Drum Every Time!
Yep, you can take various measures to achieve monster kick drums that penetrate the tracks and make the music really move, but my favorite is to run kick through the rackmount Sansamp PSA-1 and use channel 13, which is a bass guitar patch to really enhance the kick. To say that it is monstrous is an understatement because there are so many variables to consider with that setup!

For a really saturated vocal sound that cuts through any mix, I like to use an old mic like a harmonica mic or one with a crystal element. Have the singer cup the mic in their hands. I plug the mic into a small Fender Champ tube amp which is placed at the bottom of the stairwell facing up. Mic the amp and record... Even better if you can overdrive your preamp going in. No further processing needed.
With a female this can produce a nice "telephone" effect and with a loud male rock singer it sounds like Butthole Surfers vocals.
This can be used alone or brought up slightly underneath a clean take.
It's also fun to use your favorite stomp box on the way into the amp.
