Fun In NYC
I"m going to be visiting NYC september 10-17. I"ve not been since 2003, while on tour so i was restricted to a couple of nights in williamsburg and part of a day at coney island to ride the cyclone and the rest of the day in manhattan. not much time. but i've been to NYC a few times before and spent some good times in manhattan..
i heard that the lower east side isn't quite the same as last time i hung out there in 1996.
cbgb's is no longer there.
you can't get a fake id, a bunch of porn, a prostitute, drugs, and robbed on 42nd street anymore... i got robbed at gunpoint my first time there in 1990 when i was 15. yeah it was 3 in the morning and i was somewhere is shouldn't have been... but damn, what a thrill! more of a thrill than the blow job from a prostitute in the back of a limo, right off of 42nd st that same trip.. wow, also smoked pot for the first time in a recording studio as well.. on that same trip.. i think that trip is what created me...
*takes bong hit*
what i do want to do though..
ride the cyclone again, hopefully it will be raining again cause that was scary!
go to shows
drink beer
visit brooklyn
drink wine
go to shows
go to the met an other cool museums
drink beer
ride the subway, i love the subway.
hang out in tompkins and washington square parks
eat hella good vegan food and fight my temptation for NYC pizza
go to shows
buy new shoes and cheap sunglasses
ride bikes.
that is some of the things i think i want to do..
any suggestions of other cool stuff, or good restaurants, venues/clubs, shows, touristy crap, anything really...

I should add...
If you post to this thread, doesn't mean i'm gonna expect you to hang out with me, mooch off of you, or ask you for a place to stay. I've got all of that covered, and hope to be spending most of the time figuring things out by myself... its funny, i need a break from everyone, so i go somewhere that has MORE people, yet i don't really know anyone there so..... now that is vacation..
but, if you do want to suggest a show you're playing or going to, it would be cool to say hi to someone and have someone to drink a beer with!

hmmm...
A few essential suggestions for a day in Brooklyn:
Get up early (or still up from the night before) and go walk in Prospect Park.
The guys who designed it consider it their masterpiece, even more than Central Park.
It has a million delightful surprises and it will make you feel really good to be alive.
Go here to see/hear amazing music:
http://www.barbesbrooklyn.com
It probably doesn't matter what night you go, there is always some soulful, brilliant,
musician playing his/her heart and brains out. For real, go.
And then go get drunk at Farell's Bar, maybe the oldest bar in Brooklyn and probably the coolest without giving a shit. Get your beer in a 32-oz styrofoam cup and hang out with the ugliest mugs this side of the river. Read all about it:

Alll those places are within easy walking distance of each other and they are all off the 'F' line - just get out at 7th ave or 15th st.
Have a great trip.

I'm sure i'll find someplace that will rent me a classy road bike with some gears for not too much dough.

hanging out in williamsburg and laughing at all the idiots in tight jeans and vans slip-ons and idententical haircuts riding fixed gear bikes is a lot of fun.... oh, wait... no it isn't.
as for music, barbes in park slope is cool... zebulon in williamsburg has some cool stuff as well... both of those venues are more in the art/jazz/world music vein, though.... i haven't had much time to go out to hear music in a while. the local rock scene seems a bit stale these days.
riding around the city is definately the best thing to do in the summer here.... i ride everywhere. i will see if i can find someone with a road bike they can lend you. also, you can sometimes find a decent old road bike for as cheap as you would pay to rent for a week, maybe just buy it when you get here and then sell it at the end. i have an old fuji 10 speed that is really light and feels great that was 100 dollars... \
anyway, look forward to hanging when you're around.

Yes. I don't think there can be more than 3 bikes in a car or something.trodden wrote:Can you take bikes on the subway?
You may want to avoid rush hour.
Recycle A Bicycle is a good spot. The dude there is a bit high strung, but that's where I go for my bike stuffs. Plus it's near Zum. Zum has giant beers. They're at Ave C and 7th methinks.
Every bike shop in NYC has the free NYC bike map which is a pretty good resource.
