I just had the opposite of this experience at a live sound gig. Ugh. Awful little cocktail kit tuned waaaay too high. The toms were all BOING BOING BOING.

Just for the record, my experience has been that when you finally get some well made drums there is no comparison on how easy they tune and hold their tunning.

When I got my Noble&Cooley snare it was like the skies opened and the sun came out...true bearing edges, great hardware etc...makes tuning much easier, cause sometimes it IS the drums. Tom

Its really like everything else in this business... When you have a good player, and a good well tuned kit, you almost have to try to make it sound bad. No amount of eq can make a poorly tuned tom(minor seconds or some crap) sound good...

if the song is great , the drum tone does not matter, yes, correct. The song will prevail & transcend the shittiness of the drums - privided they are played skillfully.

we technicians lose grasp of the layman responses to music, it seems.

you gonna mess with the purdy shuffle or the two nerdy weirdos who helped sing me thru my first bottle of cuervo gold after the 6th grade dance which led me soon after to the first time i puked in my friends fireplace?

"pop music" with b5's and major 7's everywhere, bizarre lyrics, hell, they even sneak michael mcfuckingdonald onto 11 tracks of "peg" and it sounds cool (almost) and that wouldn't be easy for any band ever. someone back me up that its pretty interesting music --even if it does remind me of the seventies and my moms boyfriend wearing gold chains and driving camaros while smoking cigs in traffic....ok now i hate em too. my issues have issues

so...how do i tune the drums?

i have been playin for 10 years, and i still have problems gettin my bass drum sounding how i like it. i just f ed with mine for over a hour, and im still not happy...

Bass drums are such a bitch! I'm constantly fucking with mine and each one I record, up to and including at the mastering session.
