sm58 wiring

Post by davepinkham » Wed Dec 05, 2007 8:32 pm

hey everyone,
i opened up my 58 and the wires that run from the transformer to the capsule were both short enough that they twisted and broke off where they're soldered to the capsule. there's a green one and a yellow one. anybody know which is positive and which is negative? (i don't have another one on hand to reference). i also don't even know if those colors are standard.

Ha! I was just working on a pair of 57's an hour ago. I think they may be Chinese counterfeits, but the yellow lead went to the terminal with the red marking on it.

mine doesn't have a red marking, it has a + in what i take to be silver sharpie. i suppose it wouldn't really hurt it to hook them up backwards, eh?

If you hook it up backwards it will just be 180 out of phase. When you get it hooked up record a snare hit or a click with this mic and another at the same time (Different channels) then zoom in and see if the wave form heads the same direction from zero.

Before you twist it back together, hold the 2 pices apart and reverse twist the wires as many times as you can. Then Twist the threads back together. This will keep them from being over twisted when it is re assembled.
