Favorite Album Mixers

If this topic has already happened link me up. I did a search but didn't find anything.

Curious about who is known specifically for mixing. I'm trying to find someone to mix and I figure it's a good opportunity to discuss who the kickass mixing people are.

Are you a New Age tabla-and-sitar duo? Death metal? Burmese pro-democracy torch songs? Shitty top 40 pop?

Context is everything, my friend. I could tell you my 3 favorite mixers, but what if none of them do anything remotely close to your genre?

Joe Zook is an extremely talented up-and-coming mix engineer in LA. He knows a shitload about a variety of musical styles and would probably do a kick-ass job on just about anything. He's also the sort of guy who would turn down a job if he didn't feel comfortable doing it for whatever reason.

There's a shit ton of great mixers. In this thread alone a great mixer suggested another, and has another in his signature...

What's the music, budget and desired location of said mix?

it's indie rock, punk rock, whatever you wanna call it. Not too concerned with finding someone who "does that" or has a stamped sound, etc. Just someone who is passionate and unique, and awesome of course. Moderate budget, maybe 2 grand for 7 songs. Preferably LA, pro-tools to 1/2 or 1/4 inch.

(of course) Geoff Emmerick (Revolver, Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper?s)

Ken Scott, an Emmerick disciple (Bowie?s Aladdin Sane and Ziggy Stardust. Excellent drum production)

Martin Hannet (Joy Division's Closer and Unknown Pleasures. Coolest sounds, landscapes)

Jim Eno (Spoon?s albums)

Tony Visconti (Bowie?s Low, Heroes, and Lodger)

Bruce Swedien (Thriller)

A list of the often-abbrevieted superstars.

It also happens to be a list of people who have mixed many of the suckiest giant albums of the 20th century. Still, they all know what they're doing, and each of them have mixed a few killer records as well. Do you really like all of their personal styles immensley?

How do you leave BC off of a list that includes, CLA, TLA, AW, MB, NG and JJP? You've gotta just throw him in there to be all-inclusive, right?

The original poster wanted to know who the "kick ass" mixers are... and its hard to have a discussion about that without mentioning any of those guys. I have no idea what his budget is, otherwise I'm sure people could be more helpful. And for the record, each of those guys have done at least one song that I personally have truly enjoyed musically, some of them much more than that... I know its not cool to not be "indie" around here but I'm from SF and "indie" died about 4 years ago when all the hipsters start walking around in super tight jeans with their butt cracks constantly showing.

I have enjoyed many mixes by Brian Deck, Peter Katis, and whoever actually mixes Spoon's stuff.
