anybody ever add a direct out to a bass amp?

Post by yardleyone » Thu Dec 13, 2007 12:57 pm

It seems like alot of the stuff I like doesn't have a direct out on it, and sound guys seem to want it. I'd also like to be able to take advantage of the tube circuitry on the DI. Anyone ever done something like this?

Do you have a schematic?

You can prob add one, but you may loose a bit of volume. Even the old Ampegs have an "external amp" out but it does soak up a bit of tone and volume when you use it.

I have considered putting a speaker tap on the one my son gigs with.

What is wrong with running through a DI before hitting your amP? As a sound guy, I generally prefer this, because DI outs on bass heads tend to buzz.

I run live sound too & I agree with the previous post......on board di's tend to suck, regardless of brand or money spent.......
I have consistant good luck getting great bass sound from a SansAmp BassDriver.

I built my own using a audio transformer from Jensen. I have an old Ampeg SVT that uses the speaker output so it gets all the tone color from the guitar/amp combination. I have had a lot of respectable sound engineers tell me that my DI box has incredible sound. I dont like to do DI right off the bass guitar cause I like to get the sound of the amp.

yeah that sounds like exactly what I'm going for. is it essentially a di that comes after the amp in the chain? Is it powered by any of the same componets as the amp?

This is what you want. It's an attenuator with a line out, so the line out comes after the power tubes and functions even with the attenuator bypassed. It also has tone controls for the line out, which I would recommend, as line outs, even post power tubes, don't sound that great without some EQ, in my opinion.

Here is a link to the schematic for a really nice speaker level direct box. It is a passive devise and requires no power.
