I was headbutted repeatedly one night by the man. I was at the Czar Bar in Chicago watching some friend's bands play and I saw this big dude yelling out stuff. When he said "We be funkin' over here" I yelled back "Over there ain't shit!" and I was next to him. He grabbed me and headbutted me, and kept ahold of me. He dragged me over to the bar and said "my mom said don't get in trouble, don't get put in jail" Kinda scary.

I figured he wasn't dangerous after he said some other funny things. He asked me if I was in a band. I told him "Mythbelievers." He wrote it down in his notebook and took my phone number. A couple days later he left a message on my answering machine, he wrote a song about us (as he did for almost every other band in Chicago). He ended up recording it and putting it on one of his CDs, either "Radiohead" or "Mr. Magoo Goes to Jail." I forget which one.

I was sad to hear he died. He was a really good artist. I have one of his pen drawings hanging up in my living room. I throw one of his CDs in whenever I am feeling down. Much better effect than the Shaggs.

A few name drops that have no relation to my work as a musician, producer or engineer:

I dated Dr. Henry Heimlich's daughter, twice. Neither of us choked, so I had no opportunity to learn if she knew the Heimlich Maneuver.

I met Arnold Schwarzennegger at a book signing in Harvard Square in 1977. Big effin' dude.

I once had my picture taken with Dan Quayle. Cough.

I have ridden my bicycle with Robin Williams on three occasions. I hurt more afterwards from laughing than I did trying to keep up with him, though he is an excellent cyclist.

I once saw former U.S. Senator Alphonse D'Amato walk into a pizzeria in Long Beach, Long Island with two bodyguards, each carrying an Uzi.

I used to drink with Sam Donaldson and Ted Koppel at E.J. O'Reilly's Pub in DC after I got out of college in 1979. One night, two coeds invited me and my buddy to have breakfast the next morning at the White House. We ate with the girls and Chip Carter, the President's son, in the living quarters on the top floor.

I'll stop there.

I work at a studio in LA. A couple years a go when I was still a runner there was a popular heavy rock band fronted by a female singer tracking the basics for their new album (I know this a name drop thing but I feel weird doing it. Your guess is probably right though...). They were camped out for months, very friendly, so everyone at the studio became comfortable with them. The singer's birthday came around, and my boss (who is a woman) decided that as a joke gift we would buy her a dildo.

And who's the runner on duty that day? Yup....

So I drive to a brightly lit porn shop on Santa Monica and Highland, right in the heart of the tranny district, a neighborhood boasting a daily freak show. Now I'm no prude, but I've never made a "personal" purchase without the end user present, knowwhutImean? And this is a big time client, I don't want this to go wrong. As I stand in front of a MASSIVE WALL OF DILDOS I start doing the math...too realistic is creepy, neon purple wavy thing is too abstract...doesn't need to be electric...ah yes, THE MAN'O'WAR!!! A perfectly recognizable model but inhumanly proportioned. Perfect!

Pleased with my choice, I heft it toward the register. After the guy in front of me purchases a couple of DVD's and "The large jar of Elbow Grease, please,", I plop the Man'O'War on the counter. I will never forget the look on the clerk's face as he looked at the monstrous apparatus, slowly looked up at me, and said "Anything else?". Straight faced I replied, "Nope, that's all I need," and casually completed the purchase.

The gift was a big hit. It was a mascot of sorts, it could be waved around to emphasize a point, it could just sit there and lend moral support. When I would clean the studio at night I would find it in random places or it may just be sitting upright on the computer screen of the SSL J. You never knew where the dildo would turn up.

Quick name drop...on my first night as a runner there, Puff Daddy handed me his Platinum AmEx card to buy him liquor. Reading the name on the card (Sean Combes, Sean John Business Card) the clerk was a bit confused, but still sold me a case of Hypnotiq.

Monitors? There were monitors? I know there was beer, but there were monitors?

Oh yeah, here's our "sound guy" in Normal, ILL:

Actually, in all honesty, mjau did a bang-up job pulling that show together at the last minute. Nice of the club to let their normal guy have the night off, not get a sub, and provide one of the most ridiculous PA setups ever. mjau and drumsound were heros of that tour because of their hard work making sure that show went well. Kudos!

and yet it makes so little sense on so many levels.

either i already told my stories earlier in this thread or they weren't worth posting anyway.

probably both.

He held up his drumsticks and said, "See these? I make magic with these, man...MAGIC. It's your job to make sure all these people are feeling my magic, ya dig?" Then he made me paste photos of Sting and Andy Summers on his drum heads.
