BONE RECORDS

Post by swelle » Thu Feb 07, 2008 5:22 pm

Okay, I came across this in a blog:

"American Rock and Roll becomes an underground sensation in all Eastern Europe, including USSR and Riga was a Mecca for trading illegal LP's, reel-to-reel tapes and Bone Records (recordings made on x-ray film)..."

And I of course said "WTF?"

Then I found this:

Does anybody know about this technology?

This is so inspiring. I wonder if any of the people involved went on to manufacture those octava mics?
OK, OK, I'll turn down the preamps for tracking.

So...was it pressed like a record...and played on a normal record player?

Reminds me of a chapter in Stanislaw Lem's Imaginary Magnitude.

And what happens when you put one of those in an Optigan?

I shared a car ride from Pittsburgh to Buffalo with a woman who was a teenager in East Berlin at the end of communism. She said that the main way that they got records was to have senior citizens smuggle them in (if you were too old to work you could get a pass to the west really easily apparently). She said that the day the wall fell she went over to the west and bought two Cure albums and a David Bowie LP.

It's clear that the x-rays were just a cheap, available pressing medium - but how were they pressed? Did they make some kind of cheap plates, using the original smuggled vinyl as the mother?

Good question. Did they just cut the xrays into record shape and use a normal record press...
