glyn/ethan johns setup pics
Hey I just found these and they really helped me out in seeing how this setup is actually done. I'd seen a diagram before and it didn't make as much sense. So for you visual folks here you go... scroll through to see the drum pics.

Hope he doesn't mind me quoting him.
drums were done the same way on the last record.
3 mics
Coles over the snare, about three feet above the centre of it.
coles by the floor tom, looking at the centre of the snare, same distance from the centre of the snare as the one over the top.
AKG D112 on the bass drum....about a foor back from it,dead centre....
top and side mics into UA 610 pre's then direct to tape.bass drum into a Neve mic pre, then direct to tape......
top and bass drum mic in the centre tom mic panned hard left............the end.
oh yeah, Ethan got this technique from his dad.he is also a fucking amazing drummer, with a great sounding kit,in a great sounding room.....that's really what the bulk of the sound is........

ok, so i have read the explanation/ seen the pictures of the kit.
I just have 1 question:
the mic above the floor tom, is it pointing at the floor tom, or at the snare? because in the photo it shows it pointing down like a normal overhead. . .

another metal guitar tip is to put a fan in front of you while you play, so it blows your stupid long hair around like the solo is BLOWING YOU AWAY because you're a fucking tool.

Actually, Blue just came out with a specialty mic just for these situations. It is called the "Bluebeard" and it apparently will pick up every follicle and lice.

yep. I have done a couple of sessions with Ethan, and he is all about "capture". Good drummer, appropriate good sounding drums are the first step.Beauty&Wonder wrote:When I was up at that sudio Matthew was telling me the real trick in that drum sound is the way Ethan had tuned the kit..like his dad he spent quite some time getting it to sound the way he wanted before the mics even went up..

now, would that mic technique work on a vandyke beard as well? would you have to hi-pass it to work on a handlebar moustache??
god, this could go on forever.
