Will the Amy Winehouse record change the public's taste?
Moderator: cgarges
I don't care about "public taste," but I do care that Amy Winehouse and her people made a great friggin record. I make music that I like and people tend to like it as well sometimes. Check out www.myspace.com/nickafflittomusic for example. I produced and arranged most of that that is up there (in close company with the artist), but I don't think I'm trying to "go" for something that is going possibly be the thing that people might latch on to for the next 20 minutes. In other words, if I have a singer/songwriter come to me and ask me to get some stuff together for them, I am not going to hire my horn player amigos and play hihat backbeats unless it really calls for it.
I guess the bottom line is what I am trying to say is that for me, who cares if the public taste changes?

i think they sound pretty great stacked up against say, the newest killers album. i haven't opened them up in a wave editor, but they've gotta be less squished than the average major label rock records of the past couple years.subatomic pieces wrote:No kidding. Those records sound better because they are made up of more tastefully written and arranged tunes. But, they still sound pretty compressed to me.cgarges wrote:You think those record don't have much compression?thieves wrote:just take the bands that have guested on SNL in the past year: the shins, spoon, bjork, arcade fire...

From what I've heard of the new Bettye LaVette (with the Drive By Truckers) it's an awesome retro recording too.darjama wrote:Check out Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for another great sounding retro soul record.

Aren't the dap-kings the ones backing up Winehouse on her record?kdarr wrote:From what I've heard of the new Bettye LaVette (with the Drive By Truckers) it's an awesome retro recording too.darjama wrote:Check out Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for another great sounding retro soul record.

And the guy that did that Bettye LaVette record is great (David Barbe, who does all the Truckers stuff). He recorded my band's most recent album, and he was amazing to work with.

Oh snap Betty Lavette with Drive By Truckers guys sweet I gots to check that! I like the sound of the Sharon Jones/Dap Kings stuff but I gotta say Amy writes more relevant lyrics and has a bit more originality of her own... Sharon Jones is great but I can hear old soul records anytime I listen to my record collection... Amy says things in a way I can directly relate too using words (idiomaticaly) that I understand on a gut level... Sharon's lyrics sound old to me. Nothing wrong with it, it is just not as relevant as Amy Winehousekdarr wrote:From what I've heard of the new Bettye LaVette (with the Drive By Truckers) it's an awesome retro recording too.darjama wrote:Check out Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for another great sounding retro soul record.
